IMD Heavy Rain Alert: Warning of heavy rain with thunderstorms, IMD issues alert in these states

While North India, especially the national capital Delhi, is in the grip of severe heat and heat wave and the temperature remains above 42 degrees Celsius, monsoon has started bringing relief in some parts of the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh update and predicted light to very heavy rains in many states for the next few days.

Heavy rain warning with thunderstorms in South India

According to IMD, light to moderate rain may occur at many places over Kerala and Mahe, Karnataka and Lakshadweep during the next 7 days.

Chances of heavy rain:

  • On June 11: Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Rayalaseema.
  • During June 12 to 15: Heavy rains are expected over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Telangana.
  • During June 12 to 17: Very heavy rainfall is also expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

Extremely Heavy Rainfall Alert:

  • On June 12 and 13: Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Mahe.
  • During June 11 to 17: Karnataka may also receive extremely heavy rainfall.
  • On June 11: Extremely heavy rainfall is also expected over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Telangana.
  • During June 14 to 16: Extremely heavy rainfall is also expected over Kerala and Mahe.

Moderate rain and strong winds are also predicted

According to the latest update of IMD, light to moderate rain may occur at many places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema and Telangana during June 11 to 13. During this period, thunder, lightning and strong winds with a speed of 30-50 kmph may also blow.

Apart from this, strong surface winds with speed of 50-60 kmph are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Karnataka during June 12 to 15.

Rain forecast in central India and northeast as well

  • Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan and Goa: Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely at many places on June 11 along with strong winds at the speed of 30-40 kmph.
  • Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim: Light to moderate rainfall may continue at some places during the next 7 days.
  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Odisha: Light to moderate rainfall at isolated/some places accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph are likely to continue during 11th to 13th June.

Overall, while on one hand North India is suffering from heat, on the other hand, pre-monsoon activities and heavy rains are bringing relief in the southern, western and eastern parts of the country.
