Weather Update: The weather has changed once again in many parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for 11 states including Assam, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Light to moderate rain, thunder, strong winds and lightning are likely in these areas. According to the IMD forecast, winds can blow at a speed of 50-60 kmph in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi. While there is a possibility of a thunderstorm at a speed of 70 kmph in some areas. Along with this, a dust storm warning has been issued in western Rajasthan.
Other affected states include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand, where the weather is likely to worsen in the next 24 to 48 hours. The situation in North-East India remains very serious. 36 people have lost their lives so far due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains. 11 deaths have been confirmed in Assam alone, besides 10 deaths in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya (6), Mizoram (5), Sikkim (3) and Tripura (1).
IMD has warned that rains are likely to continue in most parts of the Northeast for the next 7 days and very heavy rainfall is likely at some places. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the worst-hit Lakhimpur district and assured all possible assistance to the affected people.
Schools remained closed for the fourth consecutive day in Mizoram’s capital Aizawl on Tuesday. The district administration has issued instructions to keep all educational institutions closed keeping in mind the safety of students. In view of the IMD’s warnings, the administration has appealed to people to stay in safe places, avoid travelling and pay attention to government warnings.
