The Income Tax Department has detected financial irregularities in two hundred out of five hundred cases in the e-verification of Income Tax Return (ITR) in Uttarakhand. These are the people who have not shown correct transaction details in ITR. Therefore, after departmental scrutiny, such people will be fined.

The Income Tax Department had selected about five hundred cases for e-verification in Uttarakhand for the financial year 2019-20. According to the department, 200 of these cases were found to have shown either less or no income in the returns. In many of these cases, the transactions were not disclosed in the ITR at all.

Therefore, the Income Tax Department has referred such cases for scrutiny, where the final investigation will take place. Documents related to income tax return filers will be called. According to the officials, even after this, if the satisfactory answer is not given, then fine action will be taken by the department. In the department for the financial year 2020-21 also, 550 cases have come for e-verification, which are being investigated.

This is how the mess is being made

For example, a person got insurance of Rs.5000. While filing ITR, he showed it as Rs 50,000 to avoid tax. When the department investigated, the matter came to light. Similarly, income tax exemption is also available on purchase of PPF, Sukanya Yojana, selected bonds. But, some people do not give correct information about it, which gets caught in departmental enquiry.

E-verification has started from 2021

According to the Income Tax Department, e-verification was started from 2021. Earlier the verification was done under the second scheme. E-verification has brought transparency in the work. In such cases the department initially sends online notices. After this physical notice is given.
