Indian Railways: Big update for railway passengers, will senior citizens get concession in fare?

Indian Railways Revenue: A big update related to passengers traveling by Indian Railways has come to the fore. In the first three quarters of the financial year 2022-23, the Railways has earned a record Rs 48,913 from the passenger category.

This is 71% more than 28569 crores during the same period last year. In the information given by the Railways, it was told that the number of passengers in the reserve passenger segment was 59.61 crores as against 56.05 crores during April 1 to December 31, 2022. This is 6 percent more than the same period last year.

40197 lakh tickets were booked and the revenue received during this period is 38,483 crores, which is 46 percent more than 26,400 crores in the same period last year. A total of 40197 lakh tickets have been booked in the unreserved passenger segment between April 1 and December 31. This number is 137 percent more than the 16968 lakh tickets booked last year. This segment collected revenue of Rs 10430 crore as compared to Rs 2169 crore in the previous year, registering a growth of 381 per cent.

More earnings from freight

In the first 9 months of the financial year 2022-23, freight has earned more than last year. Indian Railways carried 1109.38 MT of freight during April to December 2022 as compared to last year’s freight loading of 1029.96 MT. In this way, on the basis of the figures of a year ago, there has been an improvement of 8 percent in this segment.

Demand for exemption of senior citizens again

Railways earned Rs 12047 crore in the three quarters from April to December last year as against Rs 104040 crore. In this way, there has been an improvement of 16 percent in it. After the improvement in the revenue of the Railways, there is a demand for exemption given to senior citizens on corona tickets. In fact, on the demand for exemption in rail fare, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had said that 55 percent subsidy is already being given on the fare by the Railways. Now it will be a matter to be seen whether the senior citizens get the exemption in rent again or not.
