Indian Railways Fares Hike: New Prices from Dec 26

Indian Railways is hiking its prices again. The thing is, if you’re planning to travel long distances after Christmas, your wallet is going to feel it. Basically, the new fare structure kicks in on December 26, 2025.

This is the second time this year that the national transporter has jacked up ticket prices. Actually, they did the same thing back in July.

And here’s the kicker. Most people won’t even notice the change on short trips. Specifically, there is zero increase if you are traveling less than 215 km in ordinary class.

As a result, daily commuters and local passengers are safe for now (those too). But for the long-haulers, the math changes. For ordinary class beyond 215 km, you’ll pay 1 paisa more per km. For Mail, Express, and all AC classes, the jump is 2 paise per km.

In fact, the Railways expects to rake in an extra ₹600 crore from this move. Instead of a massive jump, they are calling it a “small rationalisation.”

And then Y followed. They explained why they need the cash: manpower costs have soared to ₹1.15 lakh crore, and pensions are hitting ₹60,000 crore. Consequently, the total bill to keep the trains running is now a staggering ₹2.63 lakh crore.

The thing is, it sounds small until you look at the total ticket price. Actually, a 500 km trip in a non-AC coach will now cost you an extra ₹10.

As a result, a Rajdhani ticket from Delhi to Patna will climb by about ₹20, while the Delhi-Mumbai run goes up by roughly ₹27. Instead of a tidy wrap-up, travelers are left wondering if another hike is coming with the next budget.

And then Y followed. The government claims they are still subsidizing about half the cost of every seat, but for the average passenger, travel is just getting more expensive…
