India’s passport has now become a global powerhouse. India has made its biggest leap ever in the Henley Passport Index 2025, a testament to the country’s growing diplomatic power. Let’s take a closer look at this achievement.

India’s ranking jumps

According to the latest report of the Henley Passport Index 2025, the Indian passport has climbed 8 places from 85th to 77th position. This is India’s biggest improvement in the last six months. In this index, the strength of a passport is measured on the basis of how many countries it allows visa-free or visa-on-arrival travel. Indian passport holders can now travel to 59 countries without a visa or visa-on-arrival, which was previously limited to 57 countries. This achievement reflects India’s increasing global mobility and diplomatic ties.

The most powerful passport in the world

Singapore tops the Henley Passport Index. Singapore’s passport tops the list with visa-free travel to 193 countries. It is followed by Japan, South Korea whose passports allow entry to 190 countries. Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Spain (189 countries) are at the third position. On the other hand, Afghanistan’s passport is the weakest with 26 countries. India has climbed to the 77th position in the Passport Index and has visa-free access to 59 places.

Although India had slipped to 85th place in January this year, this improvement in the July 2025 report reflects India’s diplomatic success. India’s jump of 8 places in the Henley Passport Index not only reflects the strength of the passport but also India’s growing global credibility. The facility of visa-free travel to 59 countries will make international travel easier for Indians.
