The CBDT said that some NRIs have expressed concerns about PAN being inoperative, while they are allowed not to link PAN with Aadhaar. The CBDT, on its part, clarified that the Income Tax Department has mapped the residential status of NIRs who have filed income tax returns in the last three assessment years and informed their residential status to the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (JAO). Is. But those who have not done so, their PAN has become inoperative.

In such a situation, any NRI whose PAN has become inoperative must have informed his residential status to his jurisdictional assessing officer along with supporting documents. They have to ask their jurisdictional assessing officer to update the residential state in the PAN database. The Income Tax Department said that those NRIs who have applied for PAN under resident status and have not updated the residential status with the jurisdictional assessing officer and have not filed income tax returns for three assessment years, their PAN has become inoperative. He has to inform the Juridical Assessing Officer at the link https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/ to update the residential status in the PAN database along with the supporting documents.

The Income Tax Department said that inoperative PAN is not an active PAN. Despite this, any person can file income tax return despite PAN being inoperative.
