What is Muharram?
Muharram is celebrated especially by the Shia Muslim community as a day of mourning and remembrance of sacrifice. The biggest historical event of this day is related to the Battle of Karbala, in which Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his companions were martyred while fighting against injustice.
The main event of Muharram is the Tazia procession, in which people come out on the streets in memory of Imam Hussain, mourn and pay tribute to his sacrifice. This procession is especially organized on a large scale in Indian cities like Lucknow, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Delhi.
