PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana : Are you also getting upset seeing your electricity bill in the summer season? The electricity bill is highest in summer due to the use of fans, coolers, ACs.

If you are also getting upset seeing your bill, then this government scheme can help you. You can apply for the central government’s PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. The government approved this scheme on 29 February 2024. Under the scheme, people get 300 units of electricity free every month. Let’s know what is the specialty of the scheme.

What is PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme?

Under this initiative of the government, solar panels will be installed on the roof of the house. On installing solar panels, subsidy will be available from both the central and state governments. Along with saving on electricity consumption of the house, the electricity bill will also be reduced. Also, up to 300 units of electricity will be available free every month. Under this scheme, the government will spend Rs 75,021 crore and it will be implemented across the country by 2026-27. The government has currently set a target of reaching it to 1 crore houses by 2027.

How will this scheme work?

Under this scheme, the government provides 60% subsidy on systems up to 2kW. For systems ranging from 2kW to 3kW, 40% subsidy is available on additional capacity. Subsidy is given on units up to a maximum of 3kW.

Total subsidy on 1kW system is Rs 30,000.

Rs 60,000 on 2kW system

A subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 is available on 3kW or more. In this, extra help is provided by the state government.

Who can apply under the scheme

To apply for PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the applicant must be an Indian citizen. There should be space on the roof of the house to install solar panels. The house should have a valid electricity connection. The family should not have taken any solar subsidy earlier. The annual income of the family should be less than Rs 1.5 lakh.

Process to apply

First, visit the national portal. Select your state and discom. Register on the portal. View details like system size, cost, subsidy and vendor rating. Choose a registered seller and get the solar unit installed.

This scheme is a big step towards promoting solar rooftop capacity, making homes self-reliant and providing energy security to every citizen. This government scheme is being run by the National Program Implementation Agency (NPIA) and at the state level by State Implementation Agencies (SIAs). Discoms have been instructed to do net metering, inspection, vendor management and connecting buildings to solar.
