The Punjab government has declared Friday, 30 May 2025 as a public holiday across the state on the occasion of the martyrdom day of Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. It will be a gazetted holiday, due to which all government offices, schools, colleges and other educational institutions will remain closed.
In this way, three consecutive days long holidays (May 30, 31 and June 1) are being enjoyed by people in Punjab, which has become a great opportunity for a long weekend. Especially since June 1 is the beginning of summer holidays in schools, so this time can prove to be a golden opportunity for children and families to travel or go to religious places.
Who was Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji?
Shri Guru Arjun Dev Ji was the fifth Guru of Sikhism. He was born on 15 April 1563. He is considered the first martyr of Sikhism, who sacrificed his life to protect religious freedom and humanity. It is recorded in history that Mughal Emperor Jahangir had pressured Guru Sahib to accept Islam, but Guru Arjun Dev Ji fearlessly refused. After this, he was martyred in 1606 AD after being tortured fiercely. His martyrdom inspired the Sikh community to stand up for patience, courage, truth and against injustice and gave the message of ‘sacrifice for religion is the greatest service’.
