RuPay Alert: Free Lounge Access Ends April 1, 2026
The era of easy airport luxury is ending. Recently, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced a major shift for RuPay cards. Starting April 1, 2026, your RuPay debit card will no longer give you “free” lounge access just for holding it. Instead, you must spend a specific amount of money first. Consequently, casual travelers who only use their cards for ATMs may lose this popular perk.
The New Spend-Based Model
Look, the rules are changing to match credit cards. Previously, you could walk into a lounge simply by showing your RuPay Platinum or Select card. But now, your access depends on your spending in the previous quarter. Specifically, if you do not hit the bank’s target, your lounge benefit will stay locked.
What changes on April 1?
-
Old Way: Hold the card, get the lounge.
-
New Way: Spend in Quarter 1 to get access in Quarter 2.
-
Goal: Reduce overcrowding in busy airport lounges.
Updated RuPay Lounge Eligibility (April 2026)
| Card Variant | Current Benefit | New 2026 Requirement |
| RuPay Platinum | 1 Domestic Visit / Quarter | Minimum Spend Threshold Met |
| RuPay Select | Domestic & Railway Access | Minimum Spend Threshold Met |
Why Is This Happening?
Indeed, lounges in India are currently too crowded. Major hubs like Delhi and Mumbai often have long lines outside. Actually, banks have been issuing RuPay cards by default with almost every savings account. As a result, the demand has far outpaced the number of seats available. So, the NPCI is tightening the rules to ensure only active spenders get the reward.
What You Should Do Next
Basically, you need to watch for an SMS from your bank. Initially, each bank will set its own spending limit. Furthermore, you should start using your RuPay card for daily shopping now. Therefore, you can ensure your “active status” before the April deadline hits.
In conclusion, the “free” ride is over for many. Next, we will update you as soon as HDFC and SBI announce their exact spending targets. Right.
