SBI Card new rules: SBI Card has announced new charges for certain transactions. Education payments made through third-party apps and wallet loads above ₹1,000 will attract a 1% charge. Learn when these new charges will be implemented and what changes are taking place.

SBI Card new rules : If you use an SBI credit card, you may soon incur additional charges on some of your transactions. SBI Card has announced changes to its charge structure, which will come into effect on November 1, 2025. This will specifically impact education payments and wallet load transactions.

Charges will apply for education payments using third-party apps

If you pay school or college fees using third-party apps like CRED, Cheq, or MobiKwik, you will now incur an additional 1% charge on the transaction amount. However, if the payment is made directly on the school, college, or university website or through a POS machine, there will be no charge.

Wallet loads above ₹1,000 will also be charged

If you load an amount exceeding ₹1,000 into a wallet using an SBI card, a 1% charge will also apply. These charges will be applicable on certain merchant codes as determined by the network partners and may change from time to time.

What is an MCC code and why does it matter?

According to SBI Card’s notification, charges for education and wallet transactions will be levied only at merchants that fall under the MCC (merchant category codes) 8211, 8220, 8241, 8244, 8249, 8299 (education) and 6540, 6541 (wallet). These codes are determined by network partners and are subject to change.

Other charges that are already applicable

Some charges remain unchanged, but are important to know:

  • Cash Payment Fee: ₹250
  • Check Payment Fee: ₹200
  • Payment Dishonor Fee: 2% of the payment amount, minimum ₹500
  • Cash Advance Fee: 2.5% of the transaction amount, minimum ₹500 (applicable to both domestic and international transactions)
  • Card Replacement Fee: ₹100 to ₹250, ₹1,500 for Aurum cards. If cardholders are abroad and need a new card in an emergency, SBI Card will charge the actual cost. However, there is a minimum charge, at least $175 for Visa cards and $148 for Mastercard.

Late Payment Charges:

  • ₹0–₹500: No charge
  • ₹500–₹1,000: ₹400
  • ₹1,000–₹10,000: ₹750
  • ₹10,000–₹25,000: ₹950
  • ₹25,000–₹50,000: ₹1,100
  • Above ₹50,000: ₹1,300

Failure to pay the minimum amount due for two consecutive billing cycles will result in an additional charge of ₹100 per cycle.

If you are an SBI card user, please check your transaction pattern before November 1st. Especially if you pay fees or load wallets through third-party apps, plan accordingly to ensure there are no deductions.
