Delhi-Milan flight cancelled due to technical fault

On August 5, flight AI137 from Delhi to Milan had to be cancelled due to a technical problem just before takeoff. The flight was to be operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which had an essential maintenance work taking longer than scheduled. According to Air India, our ground team is making every effort to minimise the inconvenience to passengers.

DGCA’s investigation revealed 51 security flaws

An audit conducted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in July 2025 found 51 safety-related deficiencies in Air India’s operations. According to the report, some pilots received inadequate training, unapproved simulators were used and there were procedural flaws in the crew rostering system. The report shows the need for a thorough review of Air India’s safety policy and training framework.

Flight AI171, flying from Ahmedabad to London, crashed minutes after takeoff. This accident is considered one of the deadliest incidents in India’s aviation history. Captain Sumit Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder were stationed in the cockpit of the plane. A total of 260 people died in this accident, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members and 19 people on the ground.

Flights on three international routes completely suspended

Air India has informed that flights on Delhi-Nairobi, Amritsar-London (Gatwick) and Goa (Mopa)-London (Gatwick) routes have been completely suspended till further orders. Apart from this, the number of flights has been reduced on 16 international routes including North America, Europe, Australia.

Re-scheduling and refund facility

In view of the inconvenience of the passengers, Air India has provided them the option of free re-scheduling or full refund. The airline said in its statement that this decision has been taken with the aim of making the operation of flights more smooth, so that passengers can be saved from the trouble of flight cancellation at the last moment.

Strictness increased after the Ahmedabad accident

This decision has come at a time when recently flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London (Gatwick) crashed soon after take-off, killing 241 out of 242 passengers. After this accident, many serious questions were raised about the technical flaws of Air India and the reliability of flights.

Air India has clarified that this is a temporary step and plans are being made to resume flights after July 15. The airlines appealed to the passengers for cooperation and said that their safety is the top priority and all international operations will be normalised as soon as possible.

According to the information, AI-159 was to take off from Ahmedabad at 1:10 pm and reach London at 6:25 pm, but due to technical fault, it was cancelled before the flight.

Earlier on Tuesday, a technical fault was found in the engine of flight AI-180 coming from San Francisco to Mumbai. Passengers had to be deboarded due to a fault in the left engine during the scheduled stop at Kolkata airport. The flight had arrived at 12:45 am, but at 5:20 am all the passengers were asked to disembark for security reasons. The pilot informed the passengers that the safety of the flight is of paramount importance, so this decision was taken.
