Bank holiday list: If you have any important bank-related work to do, get it done quickly. Banks will be closed from October 18th to 23rd for Dhanteras and Diwali. However, bank holiday dates may vary in different cities. See when the bank holiday is in your city.

Bank Holidays: With the arrival of Diwali, the country becomes lively, markets are decorated, schools are closed, and banks are closed in many places. If you’re planning to complete any important banking work this week, first find out whether banks will be open in your city.

When will banks be closed during Diwali 2025?

This year, Diwali will be celebrated from October 18th to October 23rd. Starting on October 18th (Dhanteras) and continuing until October 23rd (Bhai Dooj), bank holidays vary in different cities.

October 18th (Dhanteras)

On Dhanteras, banks will be closed only in Guwahati. Banks will remain open in other cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Jaipur.

October 19 (Sunday): It is a Sunday, so banks will be closed in all states.

October 20 (Diwali): Banks will be closed in Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Itanagar, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada. Banks will remain open in Belapur, Bhubaneswar, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Srinagar.

October 21 (Diwali Amavasya/Lakshmi Puja/Deepawali/Govardhan Puja): Banks will remain open in Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Gangtok, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Srinagar, while banks will remain open in all other cities.

October 22 (Govardhan Puja, Gujarati New Year): Banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Gangtok, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur. Banks will remain open in all other cities.

October 23 (Bhai Dooj, Chitragupta Jayanti): Banks will be closed in Ahmedabad, Gangtok, Imphal, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Shimla. Banks will remain open in all other cities.

Banks Closed in These Cities for Chhath

The evening Arghya (offering) of Chhath Puja will take place on Monday, October 27, 2025. According to the RBI holiday calendar, banks will be closed on this day in Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi. Additionally, banks will be closed for Chhath in Patna and Ranchi on October 28.

What to do if you have important work to do on a bank holiday?

Banks across the country are closed for festivals or special occasions. However, these holidays are not consistent across the country; banks remain closed in some cities while others remain open. Therefore, if you need to deposit a check or visit a branch to complete an important task, these tasks will not be possible on the holiday.

Online Banking Will Remain Open

There’s no need to panic on a bank holiday. A bank holiday doesn’t mean all your banking needs will be halted. Nowadays, you can perform most tasks from home using mobile or internet banking. Online services like IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS remain operational. Payments, transfers, and bill payments via UPI continue uninterrupted. It is also possible to withdraw money, check balance or get a mini statement from the ATM.

Bank holiday alert: If you have to go to the bank to settle any work, then finish that work today itself, otherwise you will have to wait for a long time. In fact, tomorrow, on August 15, 2025 (Friday), all government and private banks will be closed across the country on the occasion of Independence Day.

The next day, on August 16, 2025 (Saturday), there will be a holiday on Sri Krishna Janmashtami in many states. This may delay your important work. Let us tell you that the calendar of bank holidays in the month of August is different according to the state and festivals. In many states, there can be a long weekend (15 to 17 August). Sunday is also a holiday on the weekday. In such a situation, finish the transaction and branch-related work in time.

Banks will remain closed on 15th and 16th August

Banks across the country will remain closed on August 15. On August 16, many states will have a holiday on Sri Krishna Janmashtami, while in some states the Parsi New Year (Shahenshahi) will also be celebrated on the same day, due to which banks will remain closed there too. However, this holiday is not applicable all over India, so in some states banks will remain open as usual on August 16. In this way, there will be a long weekend in many places between August 15 and 17, which also includes a regular holiday on Sunday (August 17).

See the list of holidays

15 August 2025 – Independence Day

This is a national holiday, so all government and private banks will remain closed across India. Also, it is considered a local public holiday in many states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Mizoram, Punjab, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

16 August 2025 – Janmashtami / Shri Krishna Janmotsav (Janmashtami)

This holiday is not applicable in every state. But in many states, except Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Telangana, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, banks will remain closed. Apart from this, in some places this holiday is also declared as Parsi New Year. Especially in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Advice for customers

If you need RTGS, NEFT, check clearance, or branch visit during these days, then you should visit the branch only after checking. Customers are advised to complete important banking work like check clearance, cash withdrawal or other transactions before this period, as branch services will remain closed during the holidays, although ATM and online banking services will be available.

UFBU Strike: If you have any bank related work next week, then start planning for it now. Yes, banks are going to remain closed for four consecutive days at the end of next week.

This is because the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has said that its two-day nationwide strike on 24 and 25 March will be as per the pre-decided schedule. UFBU said that no positive result was achieved in the talks with the Indian Banks Association (IBA) on the main demands of the employee organization.

Demand for 5 day working week from banks

In the meeting with IBA, UFBU members raised several issues including recruitment in all cadres and a five-day working week. National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE) General Secretary L Chandrashekhar said that despite the meeting, no consensus could be reached on major issues. UFBU is an organization of nine bank unions, which has called for a strike on March 24 and 25. An official said that banks will remain closed on March 22 due to fourth Saturday and March 23 being Sunday.

Banks may remain closed for 4 consecutive days

Due to the strike falling on Saturday and Sunday, banks may remain closed for four consecutive days. However, a reconciliation meeting is to be held with the Union Ministry of Labor and Employment on March 18 regarding this matter. UFBU has placed 13 demands before the Union Labor Ministry, which include adequate recruitment and working five days a week. He said, ‘The public sector banking system is the backbone of the country’s financial structure. But, in the last few years, the number of employees in public sector banks has reduced significantly. This has deteriorated the work environment and has affected their efficiency and reach.

UFBU said, the Indian Banks Association (IBA) had signed an agreement with the employees’ union and bank officer organizations on March 8, 2024. These include salary revision and improvement in other service conditions for the period from November 1, 2022 to October 31, 2027. The union clearly demanded that IBA should implement a five-day working week before signing the final agreement. MoUs were also signed on December 7, 2023.

Former Deputy Chief Secretary of SBI Staff Association Ashok Mukherjee had said that both UFBU and IBA had agreed on a fixed days working week. But it was not implemented.

The month of November 2024 is about to end, but due to festivals and special occasions, bank holidays have been fixed in some states. At the end of November, especially on 22, 23 and 24 November, there will be bank holidays.

These holidays have been fixed due to major festivals celebrated in different states. Therefore, if you have to deal with any banking related work, then you must know about it in advance. In this article, we will give you complete information about bank holidays from 22 to 24 November, so that you can deal with your banking activities on time.

22 November 2024: Lhabab Duchen – Banks closed in Sikkim

Lhabab Duchen will be celebrated on 22 November, which is an important religious occasion associated with Tibetan Buddhism. On this day, Buddhists perform worship and religious rituals to commemorate the event of Lord Buddha returning to Tibet. This festival is celebrated with great pomp especially in Sikkim. Banks will be closed in Sikkim on this day. Apart from this, government offices, schools and colleges will also remain closed. The people of Sikkim traditionally celebrate this day keeping it in religious significance. Thus, banking services will not be available in Sikkim on Friday, November 22.

23 November 2024: Seng Kut Snem – Banks closed in Meghalaya and Sikkim

Seng Kut Snem will be celebrated on 23 November, which is the main festival of the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya. This festival is very important for the Khasi community, who celebrate this day honoring their cultural heritage and traditions. Banks will remain closed in Meghalaya on this day. Apart from this, banks will also remain closed in Sikkim on November 23, as this day is Lhabab Duchen for Sikkim as well as the fourth Saturday of the month. Fourth Saturday is a bank holiday in many states of India, so banks have a general holiday across the country on this day.

24 November 2024: Lachit Divas – Holiday in Assam, along with Sunday

Lachit Divas will be celebrated on 24 November, which is a historic day for the state of Assam. This day is celebrated to honor the valor and important role of Lachit Barphukan, the great warrior of Assam. Lachit Barphukan defended Assam in the Battle of Saraighat against the Mughals in 1671. This day is a government holiday in Assam, and various events and programs are organized across the state on this occasion. Apart from this, due to Sunday on November 24, all banks across the country will have a weekly holiday. Thus, on November 24, there will be a holiday on Lachit Divas as well as Sunday in Assam, and all banks will remain closed.

States affected by the closure of banks from 22 to 24 November

Thus, bank holidays from 22 to 24 November will be three consecutive days in some states. Notably:

November 22: Banks closed in Sikkim due to Lhabab Duchen.

November 23: Banks closed in Meghalaya due to Seng Kut Snem, banks closed in Sikkim too (being fourth Saturday).

November 24: Banks closed in Assam on account of Lachit Divas, as well as all banks across the country on account of Sunday holiday.

Things to keep in mind:

1. Avail online banking: If you need to transfer money or withdraw funds in an account, you can use the facilities of online banking. Platforms like internet banking, mobile apps and UPI will continue to work during this period.

2. ATM services: Even though bank branches remain closed, ATM machines and debit/credit card services will be available as usual. You can withdraw cash using these facilities.

3. Checks and drafts: If you have to deposit a check or draft, you will have to wait for the banks to open. These tasks may get delayed due to the banks being closed from 22 to 24 November. Therefore, get this work done before these dates.

4. Banking branch timings: Some bank branches work according to their holidays. No documentation process will be done in bank branches during these three days, but if your work can be done through digital means, then you will not have any problem.

How to prepare?

If you have to deal with any bank related work on these dates, it would be better if you get it done before 21 November. If you are not able to postpone any important work between 22, 23 or 24 November, then use online options.

Internet banking: You can use your bank’s internet banking service to do online transactions.

UPI and mobile wallets: You can also make payments using UPI and other mobile wallets like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm.

If you have to do any banking work due to bank holidays on 22, 23 and 24 November, then plan in advance about these three days.
Many types of work are affected by the closure of banks. For example, if you want to close an account or get the account transferred, then you may have to go to the bank branch for this. Apart from this, one may have to visit the bank branch to update the address through signature proof, or biometric method. If you have to do any of these things, then leave the house only after seeing the list of holidays. Apart from this, due to the holiday in the bank, any important payment of your check can also get stuck.

Many banking work is done by mobile too

In today’s time, most of the work is done through mobile, internet banking or also through digital medium. Even many banks have started providing the facilities of WhatsApp banking.
