Reserve Bank of India has made major changes in the rules related to it to provide great relief to credit card holders. The Reserve Bank has made preparations to end the arbitrariness of banks and finance companies regarding credit cards.

New rule of credit card

RBI Credit Card Rules: Reserve Bank of India has made major changes in the rules related to it to provide great relief to credit card holders. The Reserve Bank has made preparations to end the arbitrariness of banks and finance companies regarding credit cards. Now customers will have the option to choose the credit card of their choice. According to the new rule, customers will not only be able to choose the card as per their wish, but will also be able to choose the billing cycle as per their convenience. In the new rule, customers will easily get the facility to change the billing or statement date of their credit card as per their convenience.

You will be able to choose credit card as per your choice

Reserve Bank of India recently issued a circular giving credit card-debit card users the option to choose card networks of their own choice. According to this circular issued on March 6, customers can ask for the card network of their choice from card issuers, be it banks or financial companies. You can choose any option of your choice from card payment networks like Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club International and RuPay.

What is the purpose of RBI?

RBI wants that banks or credit card issuing banks and non-banks should give the option of different card networks to their customers while issuing cards. At the same time, existing customers can get the facility to choose the option at the time of renewal of their card. This rule of RBI will come into effect from September 6, 2024.

New rule of credit card billing cycle

Along with choosing the card, RBI has also issued new rules regarding credit card billing. According to the new rule, existing credit card customers can change the billing cycle as per their convenience. In the new rule, customers will have the facility to change the billing cycle. The cardholder can change the billing cycle as per his convenience.

What will be the benefit to card holders?

Credit card companies give a time period to the customers. In which all the expenses incurred on the card are added up and sent to you in the form of a bill by a certain date. After the bill is generated, you have to pay the bill till the due date. This is called billing cycle. Till now only credit card companies used to decide what will be the billing cycle for the customer, but now customers will be able to change the billing cycle of their credit card at least once as per their wish.

Moneycontrol has seen a copy of this mail sent to customers. In the mail, it has been said from the bank that non-personal usage of your credit card has been seen. The bank has also mentioned the names of some merchants. The bank has said that as per the policies, the credit card can be used only for personal expenses. All other uses including business and commercial are prohibited under the Axis Bank Card Member Agreement.

Relief was announced today by the Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das for the credit card holders. If you also use a credit card, then you must have experienced that heavy penalty and interest are charged for not paying on time.

The interest rate charged on credit cards ranges from 40-45 percent on an annual basis. Announcing the RBI MPC today, Governor Das said that the penalty and interest charged on loans or credit cards cannot become a source of profit for them. The Reserve Bank is working in this direction and very soon it will fix the penalty rule on loans and credit cards.

Transparency is necessary regarding penalty and interest rate

Giving information about the decisions taken in the RBI MPC meeting, it was said that there is a need for transparency and proper guidelines regarding the penalty and interest rate on loans and credit cards. At present, each credit card issuing entity decides on its own interest and penalty. At present, there is no such guideline on the basis of which the decision regarding penalty and interest should be taken.

SBI Card charges monthly interest up to 3.5%

For example, SBI card charges up to 3-3.5% interest on payment after the due date. If the minimum amount is not deposited till the due date, then the hefty amount is also recovered as a penalty. At present, interest is calculated from the transaction date if the full payment is not made on the due date. However, later after the instructions of RBI, its calculation is being done from the due date of payment. Despite this, there is still no uniformity in this regard.

The Reserve Bank will first prepare a draft related to the guidelines. After this, it will be discussed together with different stake holders like banks, multiple entities and borrowers and then the final guideline will be issued. When the final guideline will be issued by RBI in this regard, it will be applicable to all banks, NBFCs and other financial entities.

Additional interest up to 1-2% per month

Apart from credit cards, charges on various types of financial transactions including loan EMI, check bounce will be included in the purview of RBI guidelines. The aim of the Reserve Bank is to bring transparency and uniformity regarding all types of charges. At present, a penalty of up to 1-2 per cent is imposed every month for not paying the EMI on the loan on time. Apart from this, late fee charge is also charged separately. The rules for each entity are different.
