Heavy rain alert- Monsoon has once again picked up speed in Punjab. Incessant rain has affected normal life in many districts of the state. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert on Wednesday and has advised people to be vigilant.

Heavy rain likely in four districts

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in four districts bordering Himachal Pradesh – Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur and Rupnagar. The administration in these districts has been put on alert. Along with this, light to normal rainfall will be recorded in the remaining districts of Punjab.

Damage in six districts, villages cut off

Reports of damage are coming in from many parts of the state due to incessant rains. The worst affected districts include Ferozepur, Fazilka and Kapurthala. Many villages here have lost contact with each other and people are facing difficulties in moving out.

Considering the seriousness of the situation, the Punjab government has placed the administration on high alert in dozens of villages in Fazilka, Ferozepur, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala districts.

The state government has intensified relief and rescue operations in the rain and flood-affected areas. The administration said that 172 ambulances and 438 NDRF teams have been deployed at the spot so that immediate help can be provided to the people in any emergency.

Due to continuous heavy rains, the water level of the Ravi river has risen to a dangerous level. Considering the threat of flood, about 1.40 lakh cusecs of water has been released into the river. Due to this, the water level of the river has increased rapidly, which has further increased the possibility of flooding in the surrounding low-lying areas.

The administration has appealed to the people to avoid unnecessary travel and not go near rivers and drains. In case of emergency, it has been advised to immediately contact the helpline numbers issued by the administration.
