Electricity rates may increase from May 1

Electricity rates in the state are likely to increase by up to Rs 1 per unit. According to sources, the Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission wants to issue a new tariff by April 30 so that it can be implemented from May 1. This proposal will directly affect domestic and urban consumers who are already troubled by inflation.

At present the rate is Rs 6.55 per unit

At present, domestic consumers living in urban areas of Jharkhand have to pay electricity bill at the rate of Rs 6.55 per unit. But now there is a proposal to increase this rate to Rs 8.65 per unit. That is, there is talk of a direct increase of up to Rs 2 per unit. However, there is a possibility that an increase of Rs 1 per unit may be approved.

Fixed charge will also be doubled

Not only the unit rate will increase but there is also a proposal to increase the fixed charge. Till now, consumers have to pay a fixed charge of Rs 100 per month, now there are plans to increase it to Rs 200 per month. This means an additional burden of Rs 100 will be added to the monthly billing.

The public hearing process was completed in March

JBVNL (Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited) had already sent a proposal to increase electricity rates. After this, the public hearing process was completed in March 2025. During this, objections and suggestions were also taken from the people, the reply to which has been submitted by JBVNL to the Regulatory Commission.

Rates were not increased last year, this time a firm decision was taken

Last year there was no increase in electricity rates in Jharkhand. But this time both JSERC and JBVNL intend to implement the new tariff so that the power supply system can be improved and the expenses can be recovered.

Common people are troubled by rising electricity rates

This news is no less than a shock for the people who are suffering from inflation. Usually, expenses have to be met by making a budget every month, but this increase in the electricity bill can become an additional burden. This decision can increase problems especially for the lower and middle class people.

Jharkhand State Electricity Regulatory Commission says that the cost of electricity production and distribution is constantly increasing. In such a situation, it is necessary to make the rates in line with the current expenses. The commission also believes that if the rates are not increased, the quality and continuity of power supply may be affected.

Due to electricity being 3.46 percent more expensive, people will now have to pay the bill. However, smart meter users will definitely get some relief. In fact, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission has issued a new tariff order. The new tariff is going to be implemented in a few days. The power company had demanded a hike of about 7.52 percent. Then the commission approved an increase of 3.46 percent. The system of discounts and incentives for prepaid consumers will continue.

Consumers who use smart meters in their homes, shops and offices will get a discount of up to 20 percent on their electricity usage rates during the day. Consumers will not have to pay any metering charges.

Know how much the new tariff will be.

For domestic consumers, the tariff has been increased by Rs 24 on bills up to 100 units, but these consumers will have to pay only Rs 100 as before under the Atal Griha Jyoti Yojana. The state government will pay the increased amount as subsidy.

When will the new rate be implemented?

The new electricity rates will be implemented from April. In the month of May, people will have to pay electricity bills at increased rates. Those consuming up to 50 units of electricity in a month will now have to pay 18 paise more per unit. While those consuming up to 150 units will have to pay a higher electricity bill of 26 paise per unit.
