No matter how rich or poor one is, everyone can be seen getting bothered by the rising electricity bills. If the heat is too much, then the electronics like AC, refrigerator and cooler in the house consume a lot of electricity. In winter, more electricity is consumed to keep the house warm.

In such a time, if a technology can generate more and cheaper electricity from the rooftops of our homes, would it be anything less than a miracle? You will say that this can be done by installing solar panels, what is the miracle in that? But believe me, a miracle-like technology has been created and that too in India.

In fact, scientists at IIT Bombay have developed a new solar cell with their hard work that can generate about 25-30 percent more electricity than the conventional technology so far. Currently, solar panels convert about 20 percent of energy into electricity, with the new technology this capacity has reached 30 percent. This will not only generate more electricity, but its cost will also be significantly reduced. Currently, the cost of a unit of solar energy is between Rs 2.5 to Rs 4, while with this technology this cost can come down to just Rs 1 per unit.

The material used in tandem solar cells is being produced in India…

According to a report in the Indian Express, this work has been made possible by Professor Dinesh Kabra and his team. This team is working at the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE) of IIT Bombay. They have created a special type of solar cell, which is called a “tandem solar cell”. In this, a special material called ‘halide perovskite’ has been used in the upper layer, which generates better electricity even in very low light. The lower layer contains silicon, which is already used. Both together form a combination, which generates more electricity.

This technology is not only effective, but the raw materials used in it are also available in India. Till now, the materials used in solar panels had to be imported from countries like China. The materials used in the new technology will be made in India itself and will reduce India’s dependence on countries like China. Earlier, the biggest drawback of perovskite was that its life was very short, but the team from IIT Bombay has made it sustainable for 10 years. This is also a big achievement in the field of energy.

A huge responsibility on the shoulders of the Maharashtra government and IIT Bombay

The responsibility of bringing this technology to the ground has now been taken by ART-PV India Private Limited, a startup associated with the Maharashtra government and IIT Bombay. They are working to fully prepare it for the market by December 2027. Behind this startup is the same Professor Kabra, who has developed this technology. The special thing is that the machines and equipment for this will be made in India.

This technology will not be limited to large solar farms, but can also be installed on the roof of houses, vehicle roofs and walls of buildings. That is, more electricity in less space and more savings. Not only this, IIT Bombay and the Maharashtra government are also going to use this technology to produce ‘green hydrogen’ i.e. clean and environment-friendly hydrogen, which is very important for future energy needs.

Electricity Bills Hiked in UP: Common people in Uttar Pradesh are going to get a shock of inflation soon. Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is planning to increase electricity rates by 30 percent.

If reports are to be believed, electricity rates may soon increase by 30 percent in UP. Power companies have sent a proposal to the Electricity Regulatory Commission for 2025-26. It shows a huge loss. A request has been made to the commission to compensate for this. If the commission approves it, then electricity rates may increase by up to 30 percent.

According to the report, considering the rising expenses, the power companies have estimated a loss of Rs 19,600 crore from the current electricity rates. To compensate for the loss calculated on the basis of actual income and expenditure, the electric companies want a record 30 percent increase in the current electricity rates. They have demanded from the Regulatory Commission that considering the condition of the Power Corporation, the increase in rates should be considered.

Officials claimed that there has been no increase in electricity rates in UP for the last five years. Due to this, the revenue deficit has increased by 12.4 percent. UPPCL has presented the figures to the Electricity Regulatory Commission and said that it cannot bear any more losses.

He said that till now the electricity rates are being decided on the basis of the revenue gap arising out of the expenditure and income of the electricity companies. But the electricity companies say that in reality 100% recovery of electricity bills is never possible.

According to officials, only 88 percent of the electricity bills of power companies have been recovered in the financial year 2024-25. Due to this, even after the subsidy given by the UP government, this gap has increased from Rs 4,378 crore in the year 2023-24 to Rs 13,542 crore.

Similarly, in this financial year 2025-26, even after getting subsidy from the Uttar Pradesh government, this loss is expected to increase to Rs 19,600 crore. To compensate for this loss, a demand has been made to increase the current electricity rates by about 30 percent.

According to the electricity department, about 10 percent of the transformers in the state are not working properly. Despite the recovery drive, 54.24 lakh consumers have not paid their electricity bills even once. All these consumers owe Rs 36,353 crore.

According to the report, 78.65 lakh people have not paid their electricity bills for the last six months. They also have electricity bills of Rs 36,117 crore pending. Due to this, the corporation’s losses are continuously increasing. On the other hand, protests against the increase in electricity rates have also started. Energy and consumer organizations have accused the government of benefiting private houses.

To provide cheap electricity to the electricity consumers of the state, the state government will spend Rs 15,995 crore as grant in the current financial year 2025-26.

This grant was approved in the state cabinet meeting held on Friday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. As soon as the grant was announced, domestic consumers in rural areas have got a big relief. 1.25 crore consumers of rural domestic and BPL category (Kutir Jyoti) consuming more than 50 units in a month will now get 40 paise per unit cheaper electricity.

Whereas more than 63 lakh consumers of the state having smart prepaid meters will get 25 paise per unit cheaper electricity. Till now, consumers having smart meters were getting a discount of three percent on recharge. Now domestic consumers having smart meters in rural areas will get 65 paise per unit cheaper electricity.

To provide cheap electricity to consumers, the state government will spend 652 crores more than the previous financial year. In the financial year 2024-25, the state government had given a grant of 15 thousand 343 crores. In the financial year 2025-26, under the Chief Minister’s Electricity Consumer Assistance Scheme, the government has decided to spend 15 thousand 995 crores to provide electricity at a cheap rate to 2.13 crore electricity consumers of different categories of the state. The government will spend four percent more amount in the grant head than the last financial year.

It is worth noting that since the financial year 2017-18, Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission has been fixing non-subsidized electricity rates. After this, the government announces the subsidy. The government will give a subsidy of Rs 8130 crore to domestic consumers, Rs 1349 crore to non-domestic consumers, Rs 5055 crore in agriculture and irrigation service head, Rs 223 crore to small industries and Rs 105 crore to big industries.

The rate of electricity for 0 to 50 units among rural domestic consumers was Rs 2.45 per unit, which is still the same. Energy, Planning and Development Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav said that electricity rates are high due to increasing cost in production, transmission and distribution. But the state government gives subsidy to provide cheap electricity to consumers. The effort is to provide affordable and continuous electricity to every household, so that Bihar’s development gets a boost.

Even before the scorching heat, the government has reduced the electricity rates. The state government has reduced the electricity rates in the state.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced relief to the people of the state. He said that poor families will get cheap electricity. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on his social media account, “April has come, the temperature will rise, but your electricity bill will be lower. From today, families of Assam will get a discount of Rs 1 per unit in the electricity bill. Also, an additional discount will be given at the end of the year.”

Electricity prices have increased in Chandigarh. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has approved the increase in electricity rates in Chandigarh. A tariff hike of 9.4% has been approved for the financial year 2024-25 with effect from 01.08.2024 and due to this electricity has become expensive in Chandigarh.

As per the mandate of Electricity Act (2003), JERC has to ensure stability of electricity. It has decided to increase the electricity tariff keeping in mind the cost of power purchase, revenue generation and other expenses.

According to information, UT’s electricity department has set a target of increasing revenue by 19.44 per cent in the financial year 2024-25 and therefore proposed this but JERC has approved a tariff hike of 9.40 per cent. However, compared to Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh will still get electricity at a lower price.

It may be mentioned that earlier in Chandigarh electricity rates were increased in the year 2018-19. Electricity tariffs were reduced by 9.58% for the year 2021-22. In a meeting chaired by UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, the engineering department was asked to look into the matter and now the new rates have been approved and the rates will be applicable from August 2024.

On the other hand, earlier the High Court had also given green signal to the privatization of Electricity Board in Chandigarh. This case was going on in the court for many years, but recently the court gave its decision on this petition.
