Security checks to be enhanced for Boeing 777 aircraft

The airline has apologised for the inconvenience caused to passengers affected by the temporary curtailment of overseas flights. In addition, the airline will increase security checks for Boeing 777 aircraft as an additional precaution. Air India has recently faced operational disruptions, with at least 83 of its international flights cancelled in the last six days. In a statement issued late in the evening, Air India said that geopolitical tensions in West Asia, night curfews in the airspace of many countries in Europe and East Asia have caused disruptions and security checks are being increased.

Decision to cut flight services by 15 percent

The statement said that necessary precautions are being taken by the engineering staff and pilots of Air India. According to the statement, “In view of the complex situation faced by Air India, to ensure stability of our operations, better efficiency and to reduce inconvenience to passengers, Air India has decided to reduce the flight services of large aircraft internationally by 15 percent for the next few weeks.”

Apologising to the passengers affected by the cuts, the airline said it would inform them in advance and try its best to accommodate them on alternative flights. Air India’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft flying from Ahmedabad to Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, killing a total of 270 people, including 241 on board. One person on board the plane survived.

The airports where operations have been stopped are all located in the northern and western parts of the country bordering Pakistan.

The Indian armed forces avenged the Pahalgam terror attack by launching missile strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under ‘Operation Sindoor’ on Wednesday, May 7. The Indian Army destroyed nine terror camps, including Jaish-e-Mohammed’s stronghold in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s hideout in Muridke.

Following Operation Sindoor, more than 300 domestic and international flights were cancelled on the intervening night of Tuesday-Wednesday. Air India, Indigo, SpiceJet, Air India Express and some foreign airlines including Akasa Air have cancelled their services to and from various airports.

IndiGo said it has cancelled over 165 flights from several domestic airports, including Amritsar and Srinagar, till the morning of May 10 due to airspace restrictions. Meanwhile, sources said around 140 flights of Air India Group (Air India and Air India Express) have been cancelled. The airline said, “Following the notification of closure of Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh and Rajkot airports, Air India flights to and from these stations are being cancelled till 05.29 am Indian time on May 10.”

SpiceJet also said in a statement that it has cancelled its flights to Leh, Srinagar, Jammu, Dharamsala, Kandla and Amritsar till 05.29 am on May 10 in view of the current situation.

Heavy to very heavy rain may occur at one or two places. Apart from this, heavy rain is expected in Ranipet, Thiruvannamalai, Vellore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam districts as well as Karaikal.

IMD Update

According to IMD, Cyclone Fanjal will hit the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast on the afternoon of November 30. It will hit between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram as a cyclonic storm. Meanwhile, its speed is likely to be between 70 to 90 km per hour. In view of the cyclone, an alert has been issued at the Puducherry port, so that extra precautions should be taken.

DGCA has allowed GoFirst to operate 115 flights daily with 15 aircraft. Regulation said that airlines can start booking tickets after the flight schedule is approved. On July 25, the company tweeted that it has started handling flights from Mumbai. Airlines operate handling flights first after the aircraft has not flown for a long time. Through this rule, DGCA wants to ensure that the aircraft is ready for operation.

The DGCA, while allowing GoFirst to fly, said in its conditions that it is very important for the airlines to have an air operator certificate. Also, the aircraft used in the operation should be in a better condition to fly. No aircraft should be used in operation without a handling flight. DGCA said that the resolution professional will have to provide information about flight schedules, aircraft condition, pilots, cabin crew, AMEs, flight dispatchers to the regulator.

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) will hear two bankruptcy applications on Monday, May 8, regarding the decision related to declaring the company bankrupt. Declaring itself bankrupt, the airline has sought an interim stay on repayment of all financial debts. After hearing the matter, NCLT had reserved its decision on Thursday.

Started in the year 2005, GoFirst Air is one of the leading airlines providing cheap air services. In its bankruptcy application, the company has told that at present it is able to operate flights only after payment in cash and carry mode. In such a situation, the company has to make payments everyday. At present, the company has a total debt of Rs 6,527 crore.
