Henley Passport Index: The dominance of the Indian passport has increased further. Now you can travel to 59 countries without a visa. India is at 77th place in the global ranking of passports of countries around the world.

The Henley Passport Index report was released on Tuesday. This ranking is prepared on the basis of the number of countries where one can travel without a visa on the passport. India was at 80th place in the index last year.

Now it has moved up three places compared to that. Now India is at 77th place along with three other countries – Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal. These three countries including India allow visa-free travel to 59 countries. That is, Indians can go to 59 countries without a visa.

According to an NDTV report, the 2025 ranking is the second consecutive improvement for the Indian passport. Talking about the total number of countries that can be visited without a visa, India had 62 last year. However, this ranking also depends on the performance of other countries’ passports that year. Pakistan’s ranking has also improved. India’s neighboring country Pakistan is at 96th position in this index. It was at 101st position last year. Indians can travel visa-free to 19 countries in Africa, 18 countries in Asia, 10 countries in North America, 10 countries in the Oceania region and one country in South America.

Singapore is at the top of the Henley Passport Index this year again. It offers visa-free travel to 194 countries. In 2024, Singapore was at the top along with Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain and France. But this time it is alone. Japan and Korea are jointly in second place. Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Spain are in third place. Citizens of these countries can travel to 189 countries without a visa.

The Henley Passport Index is a global ranking that measures the strength of passports. It shows how many countries a person can enter without a visa or visa-on-arrival. It is based on data from Henley & Partners and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

New Delhi. You should also have a passport. If not, your passport will no longer be like a traditional paper book. In fact, India has launched e-passport (Indian e-passport) so that both the identity and security of the passport holder can be clear and better.

E-passport means electronic passport, which is made with advanced technology and is completely different from the traditional paper passport.

In fact, the Government of India had launched the pilot project of e-passport on 1 April 2024 under the Passport Seva Program (PSP) version 2.0. It was initiated by the Ministry of External Affairs. Let us tell you about this e-passport in detail and also know how to make it?

What is an e-passport?

Although the e-passport looks like a traditional paper document in shape, it contains an electronic chip that contains the passport holder’s personal and biometric data. You can see it on the cover page. This new technology provides better protection against fraud and makes identity verification easier.

In which cities of India are e-passports being issued?

The e-passport is currently available for people in Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Jammu, Goa, Shimla, Raipur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Surat, Ranchi and Delhi. The service will gradually be rolled out to other cities in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that it will be rolled out across the country and currently the service is available in these cities in the first phase. According to the ministry, it will be rolled out across all Passport Seva Kendras across India by mid-2025.

What are its benefits?

Improved security: The digitally signed chip significantly reduces the risk of passport duplication, forgery, and identity theft.

Ease of international travel: Immigration officials can quickly verify passports using the chip, which speeds up border checks.

Data security: Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) ensures that sensitive data encrypted on the chip cannot be accessed or altered by anyone through fraud.

Do you need to upgrade your old passport?

No, if you have an old traditional passport, there is no need to convert it to an e-passport. Traditional passports will remain valid till their expiry date. After this, you will have to upgrade to an e-passport. There is no compulsion to upgrade it immediately.

How to get an e-passport?

You can now apply for an e-passport online and get it from select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) or Regional Passport Offices (RPOs). These services are available in Chennai, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Jaipur and other cities. In the near future, this service will be launched in more cities.

Follow these steps to apply for an e-passport online:

1. Register on the Passport Seva Online Portal.

2. Login using your registered ID.

3. Click on “Apply for New Passport/Reissue Passport”. If you are applying for a passport for the first time, select “Fresh” and if you already have the same type of passport, select “Reissue”.

4. Pay the fees online and book an appointment.

5. Print or save your application receipt, or show the SMS confirmation during the appointment.

6. Visit your chosen PSK or RPO on the scheduled date with the original documents.

Passport News: The central government has given important information regarding passport verification. According to the report, now the police verification for getting a passport will not take a month i.e. 30 days.

Rather, your passport will be made and delivered to your home through online medium in just 15 days. According to a report by ‘Hindustan Live’, the passport which usually takes 30 days to be issued, will now be ready in just 15 days. Now AI (Artificial Intelligence) will be used in everything from police verification to document scanning. With this, verification will become much easier than before.

According to the report, documents for verification will be scanned through AI tools. In this, birth certificate, Aadhaar card, mark sheet, address and other details will be checked. Fraud cases like fake Aadhaar card, wrong name and date of birth will be immediately revealed during the check. If anything is found wrong, applicants will be asked to rectify it immediately.

This will eliminate the need for manual checking. Let us tell you that if you are planning to go abroad, then the most important document you should have is a passport. Without this, you will not get entry into any foreign country. To go abroad, first of all you have to get your passport made. If you have not yet got your passport made, then you can easily get your passport made in 15 days by applying online from the comfort of your home. For this, you will not have to go through the rounds of government offices.

Now with the start of verification facility through AI, there will be no delay in this. The verification work will be completed within 15 days. The government, while addressing the police personnel, has said that time is very valuable for the people. Recently, the Center had started the facility of passport application verification through mobile tablets in Delhi.

Earlier, the time limit for police verification was fixed in 30 days. In this, after receiving the application for verification, a police officer from the local police station used to visit the applicant’s house. After this, he would prepare the report and then send it in offline mode. This entire process used to take more than two weeks. Now AI technology will be used in the new process.

Indian passport fee hike news: Recently some media reports claimed that the fees for Indian passport and visa services abroad are going to increase drastically, causing concern among the expatriate Indian community.

However, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Bahrain have dismissed these reports as ‘speculation’.

According to media reports, the cost of consular, passport, and visa (CPV) services may increase by 15 to 20 times under a new proposed request for proposals (RFP) from the government. Under this proposal, applicants will have to pay for a combined package, which includes digitisation of documents, fingerprint and facial biometric capture, and four additional services – photocopying, photography, form filling, and courier services. This combined fee will be mandatory even if the applicant does not require all these services, increasing the cost from $5-7 (approximately ₹415-580) to $90-100 (approximately ₹7,470-8,300).

A vast majority of our NRI brothers and sisters live paycheck to paycheck, so that they can send most of their earnings back home.

Following this report, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) called Migrant Legal Cell urged the government not to implement the proposal. “Many migrants earn modest salaries and will find it difficult to afford the revised fees, which have increased by up to five times in some countries,” they said in their memorandum.

Embassy said – Do not trust

However, the Indian Embassy in Bahrain rejected these claims and said in a statement that these reports are speculations and should not be believed. The embassy said, “There has been no increase in the fees of various consular services provided in Bahrain as claimed. The embassy advises all concerned to avoid such unconfirmed and speculative reports, which may cause inconvenience to the Indian community in Bahrain and affect the effective delivery of these services.”

Thus, MEA and the Indian Embassy in Bahrain have clarified that reports of any increase in fees for passport and visa services are purely speculative and no such increase has been announced at present.

Indian Passport : Passport is one of the most powerful documents in the world. Passport opens the doors of the world for you and without it you cannot travel internationally.

Another strength of the passport is that it also works to ensure your identity as an Indian citizen while traveling abroad. But like most things, passport is also valid for a fixed period of time and it also has an ‘expiry date’. Do you know for how many years a passport remains valid? Along with this, it is also important to know for how long a passport can be renewed after it expires.

Validity of passport

According to the official website of the passport service, the validity of a normal passport issued to adults in India is 10 years. Whereas the validity of passports issued to minors is only 5 years. The validity of minors’ passports expires even after they turn 18 years of age. That is why it should be kept in mind in the passports of minors that they should not turn 18 before the validity of 5 years ends.

When renewing

If you are thinking of renewing your passport, you should pay special attention to some things. Passport can be renewed 1 year before its expiry and 3 years after its expiry. The process of renewing the passport should be started 9 months before its expiry. To check the validity of your passport, you can call the toll free number of National Call Center 1800-258-1800.
