ITR Refund Stuck? How to Check Status Using PAN Card

An income tax refund happens when you pay too much tax. This usually means your Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) or advance payments exceeded your final tax bill. The Income Tax Department returns this extra amount to your bank.

The refund process starts only after your ITR is successfully e-verified. It typically takes about four to five weeks after you file.

Why Your Refund Is Delayed

If the money hasn’t shown up, simple errors are the most common reason. Here’s the kicker: the Department is also doing much stricter verification this year, especially for high-value claims or complex returns. That causes delays.

Despite the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) receiving over 7.57 crore Income Tax Returns (ITR) by the revised deadline of September 16, a significant number of taxpayers still await their refunds for the Assessment Year 2025–26.

More than two months after the filing period, CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal has provided clarity on the backlog and set a clear timeline for resolution.

Also read: The Professional Exit: 10 Essential Steps to Take Before You Resign

The Core Reason for Delays: System Scrutiny

Agrawal confirmed that the department is currently conducting a detailed review of certain refund claims that the system automatically flagged. The scrutiny process focuses on preventing erroneous or inflated payouts.

Reasons why the Income Tax Department’s system flags a claim include:

High-Value Claims: Returns with exceptionally large refund requests.

Incorrect Deductions: Claims where the system detects unusual or potentially ineligible deduction patterns.

Mismatched Data: Discrepancies between the data filed by the taxpayer and the information available to the department.

Agrawal stated the department is analyzing these cases carefully to prevent wrongful refunds. He also noted that officers are examining returns more closely where the system detected unusual deduction patterns, slowing down the overall process.

Action and Timeline for Resolution

To address the flagged claims, the tax department has taken proactive steps:

Requesting Revised Returns: The department has written to some taxpayers, advising them to file revised returns if they missed or wrongly reported any information.

Low-Value Claims Released: The department confirms it is already releasing low-value refunds quickly.

Timeline: CBDT Chairman Agrawal expects the department to clear the majority of the remaining pending refunds by the end of December 2025.

Context: The Drop in Refund Issuances

Official data indicates a sharp decrease in the total value of refunds issued this year. As of November 10, total refunds fell by nearly 18% to approximately ₹2.42 lakh crore compared to the same period last year.

Agrawal attributed this decline to two primary factors:

Fewer Claims: The overall number of refund claims has decreased.

TDS Rationalization: Earlier rationalization of Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) rates led to smaller refund amounts overall.

Furthermore, Agrawal noted that the department is actively working to reduce direct tax litigation. Appellate authorities have cleared over 40% more appeals than last year, successfully reducing the pending backlog built up during previous years.

The Income Tax Department has kept the last date (ITR Deadline) for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2023-24 as 31 July. While many people had demanded to extend the deadline.

According to the data released by the Finance Ministry, till July 31, 2024, 7.28 crore ITRs were submitted for the assessment year 2024-25, which is 7.5 percent more than last year. Interestingly, the ITR refund of those taxpayers who filed tax returns (ITR Filing 2024) at the last moment was processed quickly (Income Tax Return Processing) and money also came into their bank account. At the same time, there are some taxpayers who had filed tax returns (Income Tax Return Filing) long ago, but they have not received the refund yet.

It has been seen that some people got their refund within 24 hours of filing their income tax returns, but some taxpayers have to wait for more than a month. Their money is stuck for more than a month.

Why is there so much delay in getting Income Tax Refund?

If you had filed your income tax return before time, but you have not received your income tax refund yet, then do not worry. Many people are facing this problem. Many of you must be wondering why your return has not been processed despite filing ITR much before the deadline. Why is there so much delay? And how long can it take for the refund to come? Here we will tell you about it in detail…

Also Read: Bank Holiday 13 Aug 2024: Banks will be closed tomorrow in this state, check details

I have not received the money even after filing the tax

Generally, the Income Tax Department issues refunds within a certain time frame, but sometimes there is a delay. If you have filed your tax return on time but have not received your refund yet, then do not worry, there can be a delay due to many reasons. It is important to know the reasons for the delay in getting income tax refund. This will let you know why your refund is stuck and what you should do.

Can tax refund get stuck due to these reasons?

The form you have filled also makes a difference. Simple forms like ITR-1 or ITR-4 are processed quickly, while ITR-2 or ITR-3 may take some time. There may also be a delay if you have asked for a large refund. The income tax department will check your information carefully. There may also be a problem if you have given wrong information. If you have given wrong information in the tax return, the department will ask you to correct it, which will cause a delay.

Incorrect bank account information: Incorrect bank account number, IFSC code, micro code or account holder’s name may delay the refund.

Non-verification of bank account: If you have not already verified your bank account on the e-filing portal, then the refund may get delayed.

KYC not completed: If your KYC is not complete then you will not get a refund.

Wrong account type: If you have filled the account number incorrectly, there may be a problem in getting the refund.

How much time does it take to receive refund after receiving ITR processed message?

With the income tax system being updated in recent years, the processing of tax returns (ITR processing) has become much faster. Many people who have filed their income tax returns and whose ITR has been processed by the department are now waiting for their refund. You too might be wondering how long it will take for the refund to arrive.

Please note that in most cases, it takes 2 to 3 days to get the tax refund after
receiving the message of "ITR Processed" from the Income Tax Department through
email and SMS.

The Income Tax Department says that if the refund is not received during this period, then taxpayers should check their ITR intimation messages. Apart from this, one should keep checking the email to know about any notification sent by the IT department regarding ITR refund.

The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR Filing) is 31 July. Many people have also filed returns till now. Now they are waiting for their refund. Refund (ITR Refund) usually comes within 20 to 60 days of e-verification of ITR.

You can check your refund status online. You can check the income tax refund status either by visiting the website of NSDL or by visiting the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Department.

As on 2 July 2023, around 1.32 crore ITRs have been filed for assessment year 2023-24. Of these, about 1.25 crore income tax returns have been verified so far. So far only 3,973 ITRs have been verified for the assessment year 2023-24. After filling ITR, you must keep checking your e-mail from time to time. This is because the Income Tax Department informs the income taxpayers about ITR through e-mail only.

Check Status on E-Portal Like This

If you have paid more tax than your actual tax liability, you can get refund by filing ITR. For this, first go to the e-filing portal www.inco

metax.gov.in. After this click on the quick link section. Now scroll down and on going down a bit you will see ‘Know your refund status’. Now click on it. Here you have to enter your PAN number, assessment year and mobile number. After doing all this OTP will come on your mobile number. You will see the refund status as soon as you enter the OTP at the designated place. If you have any problem with ITR bank details, then it will appear on the screen that no record was found.

This is the process to check refund status on NSDL website

Visit https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refundstatuslogin.html.

Now enter PAN, assessment year and captcha and click on ‘Proceed’.

Select the assessment year for which you want to check the refund status.

After entering the captcha code, click on submit.

The status of your ITR refund will appear on the screen.

ITR Refund Status: A long time has passed since the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns has ended. Refunds of income tax payers have also arrived. But still many people are waiting for the refund.

In such a situation, if the refund money has not arrived in your account, then you can check the status. Though the deadline for filing income tax return has expired, income tax can still be filed with penalty. At the same time, the deadline for ITR audit is 31 October 2022. However, taxpayers whose ITR does not require any audit are eligible for ITR refund and can check their ITR refund status online if they have not received the additional amount yet.

The Income Tax Department provides the facility to the taxpayers to check the status of their ITR refund after 10 days from the date of filing of ITR. Taxpayers who have filed their ITR more than 10 days back can now check their ITR refund status online by logging on to the Income Tax e-filing portal. You can check the status with the help of PAN card, for this you have to visit NSDL website tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/servlet/RefundStatusTrack. Here is the step by step procedure on how you can check income tax return.

How to check status with pan card

First of all go to NSDL website or this link tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/servlet/RefundStatusTrack.

After logging in here, enter your PAN number.

Now select Assessment Year (AY) 2022-23 and click on ‘Submit’ option.

Your ITR refund status will be displayed on the computer monitor.

Apart from this, they can also check ITR refund status online along with the acknowledgment number.

How to Check ITR Status by Acknowledgment Number

First of all login to the Direct Income Tax e-filing portal.

Login to the website using User ID and Password.

Now go to ‘My Account’ and click on ‘Refund/Demand Status’.

After this, go to the drop down menu and select ‘Income Tax Return’ and click on ‘Submit’ option.

Now you have to click on your acknowledgment number.

A new webpage will open where all your ITR details including date of issue of refund will open.

It is worth noting that the Income Tax Department did not extend the date for filing returns this time. The time of 31 July 2022 was given by the Income Tax Department for the financial year 2021-2022. That is, only those people who have filed their return during this period can check the status of income tax return. Although ITR filers with penalty can also check it, but status verification is allowed by the Income Tax Department only after 10 days of filing ITR.

The post ITR Refund Status: You can check ITR refund status with PAN card number, know what is the step-by-step process first appeared on Rightsofemployees.com.
