If the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission accepts the Power Corporation management, then the villagers will have to pay Rs 8 and city dwellers will have to pay up to Rs 9 per unit for electricity.
Not only this, urban consumers will also have to pay a fixed charge of Rs 190 per kilowatt instead of the current Rs 110. The fixed charge for rural consumers may increase from Rs 90 to Rs 150 per kilowatt. In this way, soon you may have to pay up to Rs 12-13 per unit for electricity.
The Power Corporation has submitted a proposal to the Commission for an average increase of 30 per cent in electricity rates, showing a loss of Rs 19,644 crore from the current electricity rates in the financial year 2025-26.
The maximum increase of 35 to 45 percent has been proposed in the electricity rates of rural and urban domestic consumers. It is worth noting that the corporation management has proposed reducing the existing four slabs of domestic consumers to three.
Due to this, electricity may become costlier by more than 45 percent in some slabs. For use of more than 300 units of electricity, the current rates for rural consumers have been increased from Rs 5.50 to Rs 8, while the rates for urban consumers have been proposed to be increased from Rs 6.50 to Rs 9 per unit.
Shop’s electricity may be Rs 10 per unit
An increase has been proposed in the rates of not only residential but commercial electricity as well. The two slabs of commercial electricity have also been reduced to one.
In such a case, in case of connection of up to 4 kilowatts for shops etc., the rate of electricity which is available at Rs 7.50 to Rs 8.40 per unit, may become costlier to Rs 9.50, and in case of connection of more than 4 kilowatts load, the electricity which is currently available at Rs 7.50 to Rs 8.75 per unit, may become costlier to up to Rs 10 per unit.
The fixed charge has also been proposed to be increased from Rs 330 (four kilowatt)-450 to Rs 450-545 per kilowatt. It has also been proposed to increase the electricity charges of private institutions from Rs 9 to Rs 10 and the fixed charge from Rs 350 to Rs 450.
