UPSC 2026: Registration Link is Live

First, the Union Public Service Commission shared the 2026 notice on February 4. This marks the start of the nation’s most competitive exam cycle. Now, you have until February 24, 2026, to finish your form.

Later, the Preliminary exam will take place on May 24, 2026. Therefore, you have about three months left to study for the first stage. Meanwhile, the Commission has set up a new portal to make the process safe.

UPSC 2026 Eligibility and Age Rules

Next, you must check if you qualify for the 2026 cycle. You need a graduate degree from a recognized college to apply. In fact, students in their final year can also register for the test.

Regarding age, you must be 21 to 32 years old as of August 1, 2026. Specifically, you must be born between August 2, 1994, and August 1, 2005. Therefore, candidates from reserved groups get extra years as per Govt norms. Still, general category students are limited to six total attempts.

How to Apply: The New Four-Step Portal

Then, the Commission has launched a new “Four-Stage” online system for 2026. First, you must create an account and finish your One-Time Registration (OTR). This profile will stay with you for all future UPSC tests.

Next, you must fill out the Common Application Form (CAF) with your life details. Specifically, you will choose your exam center and upload your ID proof. Later, you must pay the fee and submit your final choice. Finally, download the confirmation page to keep a hard copy at home.

Application Fee and Free Slots

Meanwhile, the fee for the 2026 Prelims is kept at a low ₹100. You can pay this using UPI, cards, or through a bank branch. In fact, the Govt makes this exam free for many groups.

All female candidates and SC/ST students do not have to pay anything. Specifically, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) are also exempt from the fee. Therefore, these groups can skip the pay page and finish the form fast. Still, every candidate must have their valid certificates ready by the last date.

Reality Check: Strict New Photo and Refund Rules

Indeed, the 2026 rules bring a major change to the photo system. You must now capture a “Live Photograph” through your webcam or phone. In fact, this live image must match the recent photo you upload.

Next, there is a total ban on the withdrawal of forms. Once you hit submit, your attempt is locked in if you go to the hall. In fact, you cannot edit any major details after the final date. Therefore, a single error could disqualify you from the entire 2026 cycle. Finally, serving IAS or IFS officers can no longer take the exam to improve their rank.

The Loopholes: How to Get Your First Choice Center

Indeed, getting your preferred city for the Prelims can be a race. UPSC uses a “First-Apply-First-Allot” rule for most centers. Specifically, once a city like Delhi or Jaipur fills up, it turns red on the map.

Therefore, do not wait until Feb 24 to finish your application. In fact, thousands of seats fill up within the first three days of the notice. Still, you can change your center later during the “Correction Window” if a slot opens up. Thus, applying in the first week is the best way to avoid travel stress.

What This Means for You

Now, you have a clear path to register for the 2026 exam. You must act fast to secure your favorite center and avoid site lag. Specifically, double-check your OTR profile for any typos in your name. Use only the official upsc.gov.in site to stay safe from fake portals.
