Monsoon is knocking in one part of the country, while heat wave is proving to be fatal in the other part. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a big alert for the whole country on Saturday. The initial steps of monsoon have been taken in South India, while North-West India is scorching with intense heat.
Monsoon knocks in South India
According to the Meteorological Department, monsoon will become active in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu from Saturday. In the next few days, this monsoon will also cover the northeastern states. It is expected to reach central and eastern India by June 4 to 5. Relief is expected in most parts of the country due to this.
One day, two red alerts
IMD has issued two severe red alerts for today —
- Heavy rain : Western coasts (Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala) may receive up to 200 mm of rain in the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rains may continue in these states for the next 7 days.
- Heat wave : The mercury reached 48°C in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan on Friday. A red alert has been issued for heat wave in many parts of the state till May 27.
Storm turns deadly in UP
Storm and rain have caused havoc in Uttar Pradesh. In the last three days, 60 people have lost their lives in storm-related incidents. Due to bad weather, four flights between Lucknow and Delhi had to be cancelled.
Where has the storm and rain alert been issued?
The IMD has issued a warning of thunderstorms, rain and storm for 29 states and union territories – including Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, all the states of the Northeast, Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. There is a possibility of hailstorm in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
Sea is rough in Kerala, fishermen are warned
There is a red alert regarding marine activities in Kerala. Due to the possibility of strong storms and high waves in the coastal areas, fishermen have been strictly instructed not to go into the sea from 23 to 27 May. The same ban has been imposed on the Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts as well.
