Tragedy at Vizag Steel Plant: 8 Workers Killed, 6 Injured in Molten Iron Spill
A catastrophic industrial accident occurred at the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) facility, popularly known as the Vizag Steel Plant, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on Monday afternoon. At least eight workers lost their lives and six others sustained severe injuries after molten iron, heated to extreme temperatures, spilt over them.
Visakhapatnam District Collector M. Abhishikth Kishore confirmed that the incident transpired at 4:15 PM. Local police reports indicate that the disaster unfolded during a routine transfer operation when a crane transporting a massive ladle of molten iron failed, causing the liquid metal—surging at an estimated 1,600 degrees Celsius—to spill directly onto the workforce below.
Casualties and Medical Emergency Response
The spill resulted in immediate fatalities due to the extreme thermal impact of the liquid iron. Emergency response teams rushed to the site to rescue survivors:
-
Fatalities: 8 workers confirmed dead at the scene.
-
Injuries: 6 workers sustained grievous burn injuries.
-
Medical Deployment: The injured individuals were quickly stabilized and shifted to two designated private hospitals in the port city for specialized trauma and burn care.
Government Financial Relief & Ex Gratia Packages
Following the industrial mishap, both central and state leaders expressed profound grief and quickly announced emergency financial assistance packages for the impacted families.
1. Central Government Assistance (PMNRF)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a statement via social media expressing condolences and sanctioned immediate relief funds from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF):
-
₹2 Lakh to the next of kin of each deceased worker.
-
₹50,000 to each of the injured victims.
“Saddened by the mishap at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. Praying that the injured recover at the earliest,” PM Modi stated.
2. State Government Directives
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep shock over the scale of the accident and ordered state machinery into immediate action. Naidu confirmed he has coordinated with senior district officials to ensure that comprehensive, cross-departmental relief measures and the best medical resources are made available to the surviving victims.
An official administrative inquiry is expected to be launched by industrial safety inspectors to determine whether structural crane failure or operational deviations led to the fatal containment breach.
