If you are going to get a new Aadhaar card or want to make any update (like name, address, date of birth etc.) in the existing Aadhaar, then this news is very important for you.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has made an important change in the processes related to Aadhaar. Now to get a new Aadhaar card made or to get any kind of update done, you will have to provide certificates as per the list of new documents.
This update will apply not only to Indian citizens but also to Overseas Indians (OCI cardholders), children above 5 years of age, and foreign nationals living in India on long-term visas.
Now these documents will be necessary for updating or registering Aadhaar.
UIDAI has fixed a list of different documents for three major details related to Aadhaar –
Valid documents for proof of identity
You will need one of these documents:
- Passport
- PAN card
- Voter ID card
- Driving license
- Photo ID issued by a government or public sector company
- MNREGA job card
- Pensioner ID card
Acceptable documents for proof of address
If you wish to update your address, you must submit one of the following documents:
- Electricity/water/gas bill
- Landline telephone bill
- Bank passbook or bank statement
- Ration card
- Driving license
- Rent agreement (registered)
- Pension card
- Residence certificate issued by the government
Documents required for proof of Date of Birth
If you wish to change or update your date of birth, one of these documents will be valid:
School or college mark sheet (with date of birth)
- Birth certificate
- Passport
- A certificate issued by any government department which mentions the date of birth
The facility of free update has also been extended.
Giving relief to the common citizens, UIDAI has extended the free facility of online update in Aadhaar till 14 June 2026. This means that you can update the information online without any charge by logging in to the official website of UIDAI and uploading the necessary documents.
Why is Aadhaar necessary?
In today’s era, Aadhaar card has become a multipurpose document. From banking, mobile number linking, government schemes, ration card, passport application, pension to school admission – any work can remain incomplete without Aadhaar. Therefore, it is important that your Aadhaar is completely updated and full of correct information.
Now the old document list will not work.
If you had made or updated Aadhaar earlier, and now want to update something again, then keep in mind that the old documents may not be valid now. Work will be done as per the new list of UIDAI.
