The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has approved a new rule that will ban the collection and storage of physical Aadhaar photocopies, replacing the paper trail with a secure, digital verification system.

The core reason is simple: security and privacy. Millions of unsecured paper copies are a massive vulnerability for identity misuse. By eliminating them, UIDAI aims to minimize the risk of personal details falling into the wrong hands.

How the New Verification System Works

The future of Aadhaar verification is digital, relying on two key tools:

1. QR Code Scanning: Every Aadhaar card already features a Secure QR Code. This tiny square carries encrypted demographic details and a photograph, digitally signed by UIDAI. It can be scanned by a dedicated app (like the official mAadhaar app or other custom applications) to verify identity offline, without connecting to the central database, while revealing only the necessary, minimal information.

2. Mandatory Registration: This is the kicker. Any entity that wants to perform Aadhaar verification—from hotels to event organizers—must now register with the UIDAI as an Offline Verifying Seeking Entity (OVSE). Once registered, they will be given access to the official, secure verification tools.

What This Means for Users and Businesses

• For Users (The Peace of Mind): Less paper, less risk of identity theft, and more control over data sharing, as the QR code only reveals limited, selective details.

• For Businesses (The Required Upgrade): They must retire their filing cabinets and register with UIDAI. This ensures a uniform, auditable, and secure verification standard across the entire country, aligning the process with India’s broader Digital Personal Data Protection Act.

 Free Aadhaar Biometrics: Fees Waived for Children Aged 5–17

This is an administrative decision with a huge scope, expected to benefit roughly six crore children across the country. The charges for the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) are now zero for the 5-17 age group.

• Effective Date: October 1st.

• Duration: One full year.

Why This Matters

When kids enroll for Aadhaar under age five, they only give demographic details and a photograph. Their biometrics (fingerprints, iris scans) aren’t captured because they aren’t mature yet. The system needs two mandatory updates:

1. First MBU: Required when the child turns five years old.

2. Second MBU: Required when the child reaches 15 years old.

Before this waiver, updates outside the narrow 5-7 and 15-17 windows could cost money—about ₹125 per update. Now, the UIDAI has decided: forget the fee for anyone between 5 and 17, for a year, to clear the backlog.

The whole point is smooth access. An updated, accurate Aadhaar is essential for school admissions, entrance exams, and accessing scholarship or Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes. Parents need to prioritize this now while the window is free.
