ITR 2025: There is relief news for those who file Income Tax Return (ITR). The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the last date for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25 from 31 July to 15 September 2025. This decision has been taken so that taxpayers do not face any problem in filing returns on time and they get enough time.
Time extended due to changes
CBDT said that changes have been made in the ITR forms for Assessment Year 2025-26 (AY 2025-26). The purpose of these changes is to simplify the process of filing tax. Due to these changes, it is taking more time to prepare the new ITR utility, integrate it into the system and test it. For this reason, the timeline for filing returns has been extended.
Why shouldn’t salaried taxpayers file ITR before June 15?
Although some forms like ITR-U have been released recently on 15 May and the utility has started working. But salaried taxpayers have been advised not to file ITR before 15 June. This is because of Form 16, which is issued by the employer by 15 June every year.
