Indian Railways to hike passenger fares from 1 July 2025 – Report

Indian Railways: If you travel by train then there is big news for you. Railway passengers are going to get a big shock from next month. Actually, Indian Railways is going to increase passenger train fares for the first time after the Covid-19 pandemic. The slight increase in fares will be effective from July 1, 2025.

Ticket prices for non-AC mail/express trains

The Economic Times quoted sources as saying that passenger fares for non-AC mail/express trains will be increased by 1 paisa per kilometer. Fares for AC class will increase by 2 paisa per kilometer. There will be no increase in the fares of suburban tickets and second class travel for a journey of 500 km. For distances more than 500 km, the increase will be half a paisa per kilometer. Apart from this, there will be no increase in monthly season tickets as well.

The revised fares effective from July 1 are as follows-

  • There will be no increase in suburban fares.
  • Monthly season ticket prices will remain unchanged.
  • There will be no increase in fares for a distance up to 500 kilometres in second class.
  • For distances above 500 km in second class, the fare will increase by half a paisa per kilometre.
  • Fares in mail and express (non-AC) trains will increase by 1 paisa per kilometer.
  • Fare in AC class will increase by 2 paise per kilometer.

Big change in Tatkal ticket booking

Let us tell you that in view of the long-running rigging in the online Tatkal ticket system, recently the Railways has made a big change in the booking process of Tatkal tickets. Aadhaar based OTP verification will be mandatory for Tatkal ticket booking from July 1. Aadhaar verification has been made mandatory for Tatkal train ticket booking from July 1, 2025.

Through a directive issued on June 10, 2025, the Ministry of Railways has informed all railway zones that the purpose of this new requirement is “to ensure that the benefits of the Tatkal scheme reach the common end users.” Let us tell you that this rule of the government will apply to online booking, booking done through reservation counters and agents. Its purpose is to provide confirmed Tatkal tickets to the common people easily.
