The BMC dropped the old rulebook. Previously, if you weren’t Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, or Jain, it was complicated. If you married outside Maharashtra? Forget it.

That’s done. The BMC just went fully online for applications.

The Three Big Policy Shifts

  1. Weekend Service is Go: This is for the working professional. Registration is now available on Saturdays (13 wards) and Sundays (12 wards), running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  2. Fast-Track/Same-Day: Want it immediately? They’ve reserved 20% of daily weekday slots for same-day registration and certificate issuance.

  3. Global Weddings & Full Inclusion: This is the game changer. They removed the condition that the wedding must have happened in Maharashtra. You married in Paris? In New York? Doesn’t matter. If one partner resides in a BMC ward, you can register it. They also extended services to Christian, Jewish, Parsi, and included the Anand Marriage Act for Sikhs.

The Logistics and the Cost

  • Online Only: The manual application process is dead. All appointments must be secured online.

  • The Fee: For either the fast-track or the weekend service, you pay the regular registration fee, and then an additional ₹2,500.

  • Modernizing Paperwork: The certificate now comes with a QR Code for instant verification. The plan is to integrate them with the DigiLocker system soon.

This move is all about cutting delays and making sure people—especially those who work long hours—can get their critical documents without taking a day off. It happened. And then the bureaucracy finally bent to public convenience.
