A growing number of Indian taxpayers are finding themselves in an unexpected compliance bottleneck, forcing them to file revised Income Tax Returns (ITR) shortly after submitting their initial paperwork. The shift is being driven by the Income Tax Department’s highly integrated data architecture, which continuously imports third-party financial records. This means income streams and capital transactions missed during early filings are frequently surfacing after the fact.

Tax professionals note that the increase in corrected filings is a natural side effect of how thoroughly the government now tracks financial footprints. Because information flows into reporting portals asynchronously, individuals who file early based on incomplete data platforms often discover new items later on.

An early filer might submit their return assuming their visible records are complete, only to have their portal update with trailing dividend logs, high-value asset sales, or foreign exchange details a few weeks later.

This issue is amplified by the Income Tax Department’s reliance on faceless, analytics-driven scrutiny frameworks. Modern processing algorithms instantly cross-reference citizen disclosures against incoming third-party data pipelines. Because even small numerical mismatches can automatically trigger an online compliance query, many taxpayers are choosing to proactively file a revised return to fix discrepancies before a formal notice lands in their inbox.

Evolving Legal Boundaries and Revision Deadlines

Navigating the transition between financial legal frameworks requires careful timing. For Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, processing protocols remain strictly governed by the legacy Income Tax Act, 1961, even though the newly minted Income Tax Act, 2025 formally takes effect on April 1, 2026.

Currently, a revised return can be submitted under Section 139(5) up until December 31, 2026, unless official assessments finish earlier. However, the Finance Bill, 2026 introduces a helpful extension, pushing that correction window out to March 31, 2027. Taxpayers should note that any revisions made during this extended three-month grace period will require a late processing fee. Once this window closes, corrections must go through Section 139(8A) as an updated return, which carries additional tax liabilities.

To avoid these headaches, financial advisors increasingly recommend a slow-and-steady approach. Waiting for third-party entities to complete their late-stage filings before submitting ensures your personal records perfectly match Form 26AS, the AIS, and the TIS. Taking the time to reconcile these documents upfront remains the most effective way to prevent future automated audits.

FAQ

Q1: Why is my AIS showing new transactions after I have already filed my ITR for AY 2026-27?

The AIS is a dynamic document that updates continuously as reporting entities like banks, stockbrokers, and employers upload their financial data. Because many institutions log their fourth-quarter TDS and transaction details late, these entries often appear weeks after early filers submit their returns.

Q2: What is the last date to file a revised return for AY 2026-27 without paying an extra fee?

Under standard rules, you can file a revised return under Section 139(5) without any penalty up until December 31, 2026. While the Finance Bill, 2026 proposes extending this correction window to March 31, 2027, any filings made during that extended period will incur an extra fee.

Q3: What should I do if the transaction data shown in my AIS or TIS is completely incorrect?

If you spot an error in your uploaded financial data, don’t just ignore it or file a mismatched return. You should use the “Report Incorrect Information” feature built directly into the Income Tax compliance portal to challenge the entry with the department before submitting your final ITR.

Why These Changes Matter

Now these updates are part of a broader push to modernize the Indian tax system. The goal is to make tax evasion much harder in the digital age.

Improved Data Tracking

First, the new AIS (Form 168) acts as a complete mirror of your financial life. Next, by linking crypto and foreign income directly to this statement, the department reduces manual errors. Thus, honest taxpayers will find it easier to verify their data. Overall, the system is becoming more “pre-filled” and automated. Because of this, keeping accurate records of all global income is now more important than ever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a CA if my foreign tax is only ₹50,000?

Now, if the amount is below ₹1 lakh, you do not need a CA certificate. Thus, standard documentary evidence should still work for your claim.

Q: Will the tax slabs change on April 1?

Actually, the current announcement focuses on rules and forms rather than rates. Therefore, stay tuned for the official budget updates regarding tax slabs.

Q: Is crypto tax still 30%?

Since the base tax law remains the same, the 30% rate on gains usually applies. Thus, the new rules simply make it easier for the government to track those gains.

Q: Where can I find the new Form 168?

The Bottom Line

Now the New Income Tax Rules 2026 represent a major shift toward digital accountability. While the new form numbers might be confusing at first, they simplify the filing process in the long run.

Overall, ensure you speak with your CA about any foreign assets or crypto trades. Therefore, you can avoid penalties and keep your AIS data clean. Thus, you will be ready for the new tax year without any stress. Meanwhile, keep a copy of the form conversion table handy for your records.

Mandatory Penalties (Post-Dec 31): After December 31, 2025, you can no longer “revise” your return.

CBDT: The Income Tax Department on Tuesday said it is sending notifications through SMS and e-mail to taxpayers and non-filers regarding differences found in Income Tax Returns (ITR) and Annual Information Statements (AIS).

These messages are being sent specifically in cases where there is a discrepancy in the transaction information recorded in the AIS and the income declared in the ITR for the financial years 2023-24 and 2021-22.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in its statement that it has launched a special campaign to resolve the difference between the income and transactions recorded in the AIS and the information given in the ITR. Through this campaign, those persons have also been identified whose taxable income or large value transactions are recorded in the AIS but they have not filed ITR for the relevant financial year.

Notification through e-mail and SMS

This initiative is being taken under the implementation of E-Verification Scheme, 2021. Under this campaign, informative SMS and e-mails are being sent to the taxpayers to help them overcome the difference between the information recorded in ITR and AIS. AIS presents a detailed statement of the taxpayer’s financial information, which the taxpayer can view on the Income Tax Department portal and respond as required.

As part of implementation of the e-Verification Scheme, 2021 , CBDT has launched an e-campaign to assist taxpayers in resolving mismatches between the income and transactions reported in the AIS and those disclosed in ITRs for the F.Y 2023-24 and 2021-22.

CBDT said that the objective of this campaign is to remind and guide those taxpayers who have not correctly disclosed their entire income in ITR. Under this, taxpayers can file revised ITR for the financial year 2023-24 till 31 December 2024.

At the same time, in cases related to the financial year 2021-22, taxpayers have the facility to file updated ITR till March 31, 2025. It is worth noting that last month also CBDT had launched a special campaign in which messages were sent to those taxpayers who had not made high-value disclosure of foreign income or assets in ITR for assessment year 2024-25.

The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) is 31 July 2023. In such a situation, if you also file Income Tax Return (IT Return file), then now a special facility has been launched for you.

In fact, the Income Tax Department has launched a new facility called “Annual Information Statement (AIS)” to make the process of filing Income Tax Return easier. Taxpayers can now verify their income tax returns with the new Annual Information Statement before filing and avoid facing notices from the income tax department in future.

Annual Information Statement (AIS) is more comprehensive than the old Form 26AS and contains all the information on taxpayers that is already with the Income Tax Department. With the help of AIS, filing income tax becomes very easy. Let us know about it in detail….

What is Form AIS?

With this help, it will be very easy for the taxpayer to fill his ITR. AIS i.e. Annual Information Statement simply means that all the financial information of the year i.e. the details of earnings through different mediums are found in it. This income includes the amount received from interest on savings account, income from recurring or FD, money received as dividend, income from mutual funds or securities and any income from abroad.

Why is it important

AIS will bring transparency in ITR filing and simplify things for taxpayers. With the help of AIS, filing income tax becomes very easy. That’s why you must have AIS before filing ITR. Do not file ITR until AIS is received by you. Because there can be a difference in the figures if ITR is filed without AIS. Although the updated AIS is not yet available, it is likely that this document will be available to taxpayers in the first week of May.

How to download

Step 1. Login to the Income Tax Portal with the help of your PAN and password.

Step 2. Click on the “Service” tab in the menu, then click on the Annual Information Statement (AIS) option.

Step 3. Here a pop up window will open in front of you, in which you have to click on Proceed.

Step 4. Now your AIS homepage will open.

Step 5. Read all the instructions given on the AIS homepage carefully.

Step 6. Click on the AIS tab given between Instructions and Activity History.

Step 7. Now you will have two options for download. First, Taxpayer Information System (TIS) and second Annual Information Statement (AIS).

Step 8. Click on PDF Download in the AIS tab. On opening the PDF, you will be asked for the password. This password will be your PAN card number + date of birth. For example, if your PAN card number is AAAAA1234A and your date of birth is January 21, 1991, then your password will be AAAAA1234A21011991.

In the new AIS form, taxpayers are given the details of all the income earned through different means. The Income Tax Department says that AIS will bring transparency in ITR filing and make things simpler for taxpayers. Experts say that with the help of AIS, filing income tax becomes very easy.

If you are preparing to file Income Tax Return Filing, then do not be in a hurry at all. Actually, the ITR deadline for the financial year 2022-23 (FY23) is 31 July. The Income Tax Department is constantly encouraging people to file ITR. Due to which there has been a rapid increase in the number of ITR filers in the last few years.

In the last few years, the Income Tax Department has tried to make the ITR filing process more easy. Therefore, before filling ITR this time, you should know about the changes.

Keep these documents ready before filing the return

Income Tax Department has introduced AIS (Annual Information Statement) and TIS (Taxpayer Information Summary) to make ITR easier. The department says that AIS will bring transparency in ITR filing and make things simpler for taxpayers. Experts say that with the help of AIS, filing income tax becomes very easy.

That’s why you must have AIS before filing ITR. Do not file ITR until AIS is received by you. Because there can be a difference in the figures if ITR is filed without AIS. Although the updated AIS is not yet available, it is likely that this document will be available to taxpayers in the first week of May.

What is AIS?

In the new AIS form, taxpayers are given the details of all the income earned through different means. These include savings account interest income, recurring and fixed deposit income, income from dividend, mutual funds, and Income from securities transactions, money received from abroad etc. are included. To make ITR filing easy, you will see all types of transactions in AIS. In this, taxpayers get lump sum information about the taxable amount. Earlier the department had started it on trial basis, now it has been made compulsory.

Generally, the salaried class files ITR on the basis of Form-16. However, apart from this, many types of income and even gifts also come under the ambit of income tax. This is where AIS and TIS prove to be helpful for taxpayers. In AIS, you get the details of every income from sources other than salary, which have been specified under the Income Tax Act 1961. Meaning, information about every income that is in the taxable category will be available in it. In simple words, the detailed statement of all the financial transactions done during a financial year can be called AIS. TIS is the summary of this.

Download AIS/TIS online like this (How to Download AIS/TIS)…

First of all go to the Income Tax Filing Portal (www.incometax.gov.in).

Now log in to your account with the help of PAN number and password.

Go to the Services tab in the top menu.

Select ‘Annual Information Statement (AIS)’ from the dropdown.

A separate website will open as soon as you click on Proceed.

Select the option of AIS on the new website.

Now you will get the option to download both AIS and TIS.

You can download AIS and TIS in PDF or JSON format.

Apart from this, now the AIS app has also been launched. Whose name is AIS For Taxpayers. With its help, taxpayers will be able to easily view the information available in Annual Information Statement (AIS) or Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) on their phones. This mobile application can be downloaded for free from Google Play and App Store.

Process of Registration on AIS App

Open Google Play Store on your mobile phone.

Now search by typing AIS for Taxpayers in the search option.

After this the AIS app will appear on your mobile screen.

Click on the install option given next to it and it will be downloaded.

After the app is downloaded in the phone, open it and fill the PAN card details.

After registering yourself through PAN details, OTP will come on your registered number.

Authentication will have to be done through this OTP and registered e-mail on the e-filing portal.

After this, you can start using the mobile by setting a 4 digit PIN.

Through AIS App, taxpayers can get information of 46 types of transactions on their mobile phones. Apart from this, filing of Income Tax Return (ITR) will also become easier. Through the information available on this, taxpayers can avoid mistakes while filing ITR.

Apart from this, keep some documents ready before filing the return. Among the documents that the Income Tax Department is talking about, Form 16, bank statement, interest certificate received from the bank, if there is a home loan, then its statement is necessary.
