Trump said that India will have to pay 25 percent duty and penalty from August 1. He further said that our trade deficit with India is very high. However, the US President described India as his ‘friend’ in a social media post.

He said, “India is our friend, but we have done relatively little trade with them over the last several years because their tariffs are very high, the ‘highest’ in the world. They have the ‘most stringent and obnoxious’ non-monetary trade barriers.”

Besides, they have always purchased the bulk of their military equipment from Russia, and are the biggest buyer of Russian energy along with China, while everyone wants Russia to stop the killings in Ukraine, he said.

The US President said, “Everything is not fine! That is why India will have to pay 25 percent duty and ‘penalty’ for purchases from Russia from August 1.”

There has been no response from India yet on Trump’s announcement.

A US team is scheduled to visit India next month for the next round of talks on the proposed bilateral trade agreement.

Teams from India and the US completed the fifth round of talks on the agreement in Washington last week.

India’s Chief Negotiator and Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce, Rajesh Agarwal, and Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, Brendan Lynch, held the discussions.

This tariff will come into effect from April 9 and will be imposed on all goods exported from India to the US. Earlier, while announcing the retaliatory duty, Donald Trump showed a chart showing that now India, China, UK and the European Union will have to pay duty on all their exports. The tariff on India has been reduced by 1 percent because the US has imposed only 50 percent of the tariff imposed by it on each country. If India collects 52 percent, it should have been imposed at the rate of 26 percent but it was imposed at 27 percent by mistake.

Tariff reform or relaxation

The chart released by the US shows that India collects 52 percent duty, which includes currency manipulation and trade barriers, and now the US will collect a concessional retaliatory duty of 26 percent from India. Earlier, the White House documents showed a 27 percent duty on India. It has been updated and reduced to 26 percent. However, looking at the documents, it seems that the US has not given this relaxation in the tariff, but has improved it. It was $27.7 billion in 2022-23, $32.85 billion in 2021-22, $22.73 billion in 2020-21 and $17.26 billion in 2019-20.

India’s major exports to the US in 2024 included pharmaceutical manufacturing and biological products ($8.1 billion), telecommunications equipment ($6.5 billion), precious and semi-precious stones ($5.3 billion), petroleum products ($4.1 billion), gold and others included precious metal jewelry ($3.2 billion), cotton ready-made garments including accessories ($2.8 billion) and iron and steel products ($2.7 billion). Similarly, imports included crude oil ($4.5 billion), petroleum products ($3.6 billion), coal, coke ($3.4 billion), cut and polished diamonds ($2.6 billion), electrical machinery ($1.4 billion), aircraft, spacecraft and their parts ($1.3 billion) and gold ($1.3 billion).

“However, they may seek relief through waivers, cancellation of removal or other legal defenses, particularly if they have strong family ties or have lived in the U.S. for a long time,” he added.

• The G-1 visa is issued to permanent members of a diplomatic mission of a recognized government. For example, it is issued to a permanently posted representative to an international organization.

• The G-3 visa applies to representatives of unrecognised or non-member governments.
• The G-4 visa is for individuals who are working or serving as officials in international organizations, including the United Nations.

Criteria to be eligible for interview exemption

The ministry further clarifies, “To be eligible for an interview exemption, applicants must meet certain criteria, including that they apply in their country of nationality or residence, have never been refused a visa (unless such refusal has been remitted or waived) and have no apparent or potential disqualifications.”

Dropbox eligibility period reduced

Meanwhile, the US Department of State has abruptly reduced the eligibility period for the Visa Interview Waiver (Dropbox) from 48 months to just 12 months, creating complications for thousands of Indian applicants. According to the National Law Review, “Applicants will now have to renew visas in the same nonimmigrant classification that expired within the last 12 months to qualify for Dropbox processing.”

Air India said in a statement without naming the destinations that a limited number of flights have been cancelled between November and December due to maintenance and supply chain delays. The affected passengers have been informed about this and have been given the option of traveling in other Air India services.

Sources told PTI that between November 15 and December 31, Air India has cancelled flights to San Francisco, Washington, Chicago, Newark and New York as there is not enough availability of wide-body aircraft for these destinations. 14 flights on Delhi-Chicago route, 28 flights on Delhi-Washington route, 12 flights on Delhi-San Francisco route, 4 flights on Mumbai-New York route and 2 flights on Delhi-Newark route have been cancelled.

According to sources, Air India is facing delays in getting aircraft from the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) operator, as well as some large-sized aircraft are temporarily out of service due to technical problems. An Air India spokesperson said, “There has been a temporary reduction in the operational fleet due to challenges in maintenance and supply chain. Air India regrets this.”
