Your air travel experience could soon change. In fact, there will be no need to check-in at the airport or show a boarding pass. Now you will be able to catch a flight just by showing your face and a digital ID from your phone.

This change is being considered the biggest improvement in air travel in the last 50 years. Under the leadership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), aviation industries around the world are creating a new system. It is called the ‘digital travel credential’. In this, the entire process will be completed only through a face scan and a smartphone.

According to British aviation experts, if this new technology is adopted on a large scale, these changes could be implemented in the next 2 to 3 years. According to The Times, this upgrade means that passengers will no longer need to check-in before flights or carry a boarding pass. Instead, when passengers book a flight, they will receive a ‘journey pass’ on their phone, which will contain all the necessary information, including passport data, seat assignment, etc.

The biggest change in the aviation industry in 50 years

Valerie Viale, director of product management at Amadeus, the world’s largest travel technology provider, told The Times that this will be the biggest change in the aviation industry in the last 50 years.

What will this mean for the passenger?

If the system is fully implemented, the need for boarding passes, passport checks and physical ID verification will be eliminated in many places. Facial recognition scanners at key touchpoints will identify passengers and notify airlines of their arrival. For those with only hand luggage, facial scans at security entrances could replace any physical check-in. For those with checked baggage, verification will be done at bag drop. In both cases, the passenger will not need to produce their passport or boarding pass.

The current process is complicated.

Currently, passengers have to check in online or at the airport, enter passport details and receive a scannable boarding pass. After the change, this process will disappear completely.

Compensation on Flight Death: The International Civil Aviation Organization has changed the rules related to international flights under the Montreal Convention and increased the limit of compensation. The new rules will come into effect from December 28.

To benefit passengers during international flights, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has announced an increase in the compensation given by the airlines. This includes compensation related to flight delays, injury or death due to an accident during travel.

This change by ICAO will benefit international passengers from 140 countries including India. ICAO has said that the changes made regarding compensation given under the Montreal Convention will come into effect from December 28.

Increased from Rs 1.4 crore to Rs 1.7 crore

According to a report by Times of India, the compensation amount in case of death of a passenger has been increased to 1,51,880 SDR. This amount is Rs 1.7 crore when converted into Indian rupees. At present, the compensation amount is Rs 1.4 crore.

The Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Air Transport (MC99), formally known as the Montreal Convention, establishes a broad framework for international air travel and sets forth airlines’ responsibilities for cases of injury, death, delay to passengers, baggage and cargo.

Changes are made every five years

This change in the compensation amount has been made under the built-in review mechanism of the convention. According to the convention, it is changed every five years in view of inflation. The International Civil Aviation Organization has asked all countries to make legal provisions by the end of December.

The amount fixed under the Montreal Convention is only about the upper limit of compensation to be given by the airline company. That is, it is not necessary that in case of the death of the passenger, his family members will get exactly the same amount.

For example, in the year 2020, 21 people died in Air India Express IX-1344 which was coming from Dubai to Calicut. This flight also comes under the provisions of the Montreal Convention. But the airline company gave compensation to the relatives of Rs 10 lakh for the families of adults above 12 years of age and Rs 5 lakh for the families of children below 12 years of age.
