Your air travel experience could soon change. In fact, there will be no need to check-in at the airport or show a boarding pass. Now you will be able to catch a flight just by showing your face and a digital ID from your phone.
This change is being considered the biggest improvement in air travel in the last 50 years. Under the leadership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), aviation industries around the world are creating a new system. It is called the ‘digital travel credential’. In this, the entire process will be completed only through a face scan and a smartphone.
According to British aviation experts, if this new technology is adopted on a large scale, these changes could be implemented in the next 2 to 3 years. According to The Times, this upgrade means that passengers will no longer need to check-in before flights or carry a boarding pass. Instead, when passengers book a flight, they will receive a ‘journey pass’ on their phone, which will contain all the necessary information, including passport data, seat assignment, etc.
The biggest change in the aviation industry in 50 years
Valerie Viale, director of product management at Amadeus, the world’s largest travel technology provider, told The Times that this will be the biggest change in the aviation industry in the last 50 years.
What will this mean for the passenger?
If the system is fully implemented, the need for boarding passes, passport checks and physical ID verification will be eliminated in many places. Facial recognition scanners at key touchpoints will identify passengers and notify airlines of their arrival. For those with only hand luggage, facial scans at security entrances could replace any physical check-in. For those with checked baggage, verification will be done at bag drop. In both cases, the passenger will not need to produce their passport or boarding pass.
The current process is complicated.
Currently, passengers have to check in online or at the airport, enter passport details and receive a scannable boarding pass. After the change, this process will disappear completely.
