According to NHAI, this pass will be valid for one year or 200 trips. If someone plies the highway daily and completes 200 trips in four months, he will have to take ATP again. Thus, one can take three ATPs in a year. There is no limit to ATP. A driver can take as many ATPs as he wants. That is, as many ATPs as are required can be taken.

What happens if trips are less than 200?

If a driver takes ATP but travels less on national highways or expressways and thus 200 trips are not completed. Then the money left in ATP will neither be refunded nor transferred further. All the remaining money will be lost. Therefore, it will be beneficial to use it.

The government has said that 200 trips can be made in a year through the pass made under the new toll policy. In this context, the cost of a trip will be only Rs 15. If we compare this rate with the current toll rates, then a one-way trip from Delhi to Jaipur will cost only Rs 45, which currently costs around Rs 370.

Under the new toll policy, 200 trips can be made through the annual pass. But, before knowing your savings, you have to understand what this trip means. In fact, in the new policy, it is clearly stated that one trip will mean crossing the toll once. If you are going from Delhi to Jaipur, you will have to cross 3 toll plazas on the way. Thus, it will be said that you have completed 3 trips. Now if you come back, you will cross the same 3 toll plazas and it will be considered as 3 trips again. Under normal circumstances, you would say that a trip will be considered complete by going from Delhi to Jaipur and returning from Jaipur to Delhi. But, in the new toll policy, it will be considered as 6 trips, because you have crossed the toll 6 times while going and returning.

How much toll tax is charged from Delhi to Jaipur now?

If you travel from Delhi to Jaipur frequently, the new toll policy will save you thousands of rupees. Think of it this way, if you travel from Delhi to Jaipur via National Highway 48, you will have to cross three toll plazas. The first is Daulatpura Toll, the second is Manoharpur Toll and the third is Shahjahanpur Toll Plaza. Currently, you have to pay a total toll tax of Rs 370 at these three plazas.

How much money will be saved on each trip with the new policy?

As you already know, currently a total toll tax of Rs 370 has to be paid from Delhi to Jaipur. However, after the new toll policy comes in, this cost will come down to just Rs 45. This is because in the new policy, Rs 3,000 will have to be paid for 200 trips, whereas one trip i.e. a toll costs only Rs 15. Thus, only Rs 45 will be spent for 3 toll plazas between Delhi and Jaipur. This cost will be for one way.

How much money will you save in a year…

To know how much money you will save in a year with the new toll policy, first of all, you have to divide 200 trips into 3 parts. In this way, you can travel from Delhi to Jaipur or from Jaipur to Delhi about 67 times in a year. Currently, the cost of a single trip is Rs 370, so in 67 trips, you will have to spend about Rs 24,790 as per the current rate. But, under the new policy, your cost for a one-way trip will be only Rs 45, accordingly, the total cost of traveling 67 times in a year will be Rs 3,015. In this way, you will save Rs 21,775 in a year in traveling from Delhi to Jaipur.

How much savings from Delhi to Lucknow…

Although there is no NHAI expressway from Delhi to Lucknow, if it is implemented on private expressways, it will be very beneficial. For example, currently one has to cross two major expressways while travelling from Delhi to Lucknow. The first is the Yamuna Expressway which has three toll plazas, Jewar Toll Plaza (near Noida), Mathura Toll Plaza (near Mathura), Agra Toll Plaza (near Agra). The second expressway is the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, on which toll is deducted only once till Lucknow. It costs around Rs 1,200 to cross these four tolls. In the new toll policy, it will be considered as only 4 trips and at a rate of Rs 15, the cost will be Rs 60. This means that instead of Rs. 1,200, you spend only Rs. 60 and save Rs. 1,140 in one trip.

For this, people will get two payment options, one is an annual pass and the other is a distance-based fee. Distance-based charging will be beneficial for people who travel less. After the arrival of the new FASTag system, people will not have to face traffic jams at toll plazas and people will also save fuel. The On Board Unit (OBD) unit will act like a tracker device that will transmit your vehicle’s signal to the satellite. After the implementation of the new toll system, the existing RFID based FASTag system will be phased out completely.

The main feature of the new toll system is that a satellite or a group of satellites will be used to monitor the movement of vehicles. Toll or user fee will be decided based on actual distance. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had earlier this week amended the NH toll rules to allow toll collection using satellite based toll collection system.

According to information, Indian satellite NavIC will be used to implement the new toll system. Currently, some vehicles will be driven with the onboard unit to test the new toll system, but let us know when you need to install it in your vehicle.

Tracking devices will be pre-installed in vehicles

For the satellite based toll system to work, vehicles will have to be fitted with on-board units. Within the next few years, new vehicles will start coming with pre-fitted onboard units. On-board units to be installed in trucks first

The on-board unit for the satellite-based toll collection system will first be installed in trucks, buses and vehicles carrying dangerous goods. Toll collection to start from 2025

Satellite-based toll system will be implemented on 2,000 km of national highways by June 2025. It is targeted to increase this to 10,000 km in nine months, 25,000 km in 15 months and 50,000 km in two years. For this, the highway owning agencies of the Central Government have completed Geo Fencing of almost the entire length of the National Highways.

Geo fencing is important for marking precise entry and exit points for the purpose of toll calculation. The total length of national highways in India is about 1.4 lakh km, of which about 45,000 km are tolled.

The new policy will only benefit vehicles in which the GNSS system is working and drivers can cover a distance of up to 20 km.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Transport, private vehicle owners will not have to pay any tax for traveling up to 20 KM daily on highways and expressways. However, this exemption will be available to those who have GNSS system running in their vehicles. Whereas, if private vehicle drivers cover a distance of more than 20 km, the toll will be charged based on the actual distance.

What is GNSS and what are its uses?

\Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a modern technology used for vehicle tracking and navigation. This technology is similar to GPS (Global Positioning System), which detects the exact location of the vehicle and the route of travel. This system has recently been implemented by the Ministry of Roads and Transport as a toll collection system in conjunction with FASTAG. The vehicle’s journey is tracked by the GNSS system, and the toll fee is calculated based on it. This system is already being used on some major highways and expressways.

Pilot project in Haryana and Karnataka

This system has been implemented for the first time as a pilot project in Haryana and Karnataka. GNSS based toll collection system is being tested in these areas. If this system is successful then it will be decided to implement it in the entire country.

This new system will start from Dwarka Expressway, which has become India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll collection system. NHAI has invited bids from banks for this, in which the bank offering the highest revenue share will be given tolling rights for three years.

MLFF system eliminates the need for physical toll plazas

Under the MLFF system, traditional toll plazas will not be used. Instead, sensors and equipment will be installed on the pillars, which will collect information of passing vehicles. As soon as a vehicle passes these sensors, the vehicle information will be sent to the electronic toll payment system, which will deduct the amount from the Fastag wallet. The system aims to reduce congestion at toll plazas and make the experience of motorists easier. It will also ensure more transparency in toll collection as banks are regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Banks allowed to have sub-contractors

Since banks do not have direct experience in toll collection, NHAI subsidiary IHMCL has allowed banks to hire sub-contractors. According to the bid document, the sub-contractors should have experience of working on a tolling system of at least 200 km, whether in India or abroad. These sub-contractors will help in further streamlining the toll collection process.

Conditions in NOC and fitness certificate on outstanding toll

The MLFF system will not only deduct toll fee from the Fastag wallet but will also identify vehicles that do not have a Fastag or whose tag is defective. The information of such vehicles will be shared with the central vehicle database ‘Vahan’, making it mandatory for drivers to pay the outstanding toll. If they do not pay the outstanding amount, they will not get NOC and fitness certificate, which will bring more transparency in the process.

Toll rates not yet decided

Toll rates have not been decided yet for the 28 km long Dwarka Expressway. Toll will be collected only from the tolling point located on the Delhi-Gurgaon border. The successful bidder will get the right to collect toll for three years and will have to implement this system within three months of getting the contract.

Yamuna Expressway is one of the few expressways where toll is also charged on two-wheelers.

Toll for going from Noida to Agra

If you travel by car or jeep, the one-way toll will be around Rs 500. Whereas, for two-wheelers it will be around Rs 250. YEIDA CEO Arun Veer Singh said that Jaypee Infratech Limited was demanding an increase in the toll from 2021-22, but we did not allow this to happen in the interest of the general public. He said that there was no change in the toll in the last three years, and the 12 percent increase made now is equivalent to an average annual increase of 4 percent.
