Indian Railways has provided information regarding the cancellation and refund rules for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, a premium overnight service. This information explains the cancellation and refund charges a passenger will incur if they have a confirmed ticket and wish to cancel it just a few hours before their journey.

How much will you have to pay?

According to the rules governing ticket cancellation and refunds for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, if passengers cancel their tickets within 72 hours of the train’s departure, the full amount will be refunded after deducting 25% of the ticket amount.

If passengers cancel their tickets between 8 hours and 72 hours before the train’s departure, they will be refunded 50% of the fare.

If passengers do not cancel their tickets within 8 hours of the train’s departure, or if they do so after that, they will not receive a refund.

That is, if you are planning to travel on Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, and you are planning to cancel your ticket once it’s booked, keep in mind that if you cancel your ticket within 8 hours of the train’s departure, you will receive a refund. However, if you cancel your ticket within 8 hours of the train’s departure, you will not receive any refund.

Railway’s special preparations for the festive season

Earlier, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the Railways has made special arrangements for the convenience of lakhs of passengers traveling to and from Bihar during festivals like Diwali and Chhath. This time special trains will be run for two months, so that the return of migrants is easy and convenient. Along with this, the Railways has also started a new pilot scheme, in which up to 20 percent discount will be given on return tickets if the tickets for going and coming together are booked under the round trip package. • AC First Class: The most premium and comfortable coach, in which passengers will get special facilities.
• AC Second Tier: Medieval level coach, which will be a great combination of comfort and convenience.  
• AC Three Tier: Economical but equipped with modern facilities coaches.

1128 passengers will be able to travel in the train at a time. Every coach has been designed in such a way that passengers get complete comfort even during long distance travel.

They have built a special production line for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains there. TRSL Vice Chairman and Managing Director Umesh Chaudhary and BHEL Director Bani Verma inaugurated this production line. TRSL has got a contract from Indian Railways to make 80 Vande Bharat Sleeper Train sets. This contract has been signed under an agreement between TRSL and BHEL.

When will the first train be made?

Work has now started at the Uttarpara unit. It is expected that the first train will be ready by next year. This factory has the features of Industry 4.0 and also has robot-operated production lines. This is the only place in the country where both stainless steel and aluminium coaches can be made under one roof. Industry 4.0 means that modern technology and automation are being used in the factory.

Designed in India itself

The sleeper version of Vande Bharat will be India’s first long distance, semi high-speed train. It has been completely designed in India. It will provide comfort to the passengers and will also have modern features for safety. The coaches of the train have been built in a modern way. It has smart systems and it runs on less power. This train will give a new experience of traveling between cities in India.

Currently being made in the same factory

At present, only BEML is manufacturing Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. BEML is a public sector undertaking of the Ministry of Defence. It has already been manufacturing coaches for the railways. It has manufactured the prototype set of Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. It was trialled by running it around Kota in Rajasthan . There are plans to run this train set on the New Delhi to Howrah route.

Indian Railways is going to launch Vande Bharat Sleeper train between Delhi and Howrah. It will be the third premium service on this route after Rajdhani Express and Duronto Express. This Vande Bharat train running between Delhi and Howrah will stop at Kanpur Central, Prayagraj Junction, DD Upadhyay Junction, Gaya Junction, Dhanbad Junction and Asansol Junction. The fare of AC 3-tier of this train is expected to be around Rs 3000, AC 2-tier Rs 4000 and First Class AC fare is Rs 5100. This train will leave from New Delhi at 5 pm and reach Howrah at 8 am. On the return journey, it will leave from Howrah at 5 pm and reach Delhi at 8 am the next day.

The train will have 16 coaches, including 11 AC Tier-3

This train has been built by BEML using Integral Coach Factory technology. According to the information, this train will have 16 coaches. These will include 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 4 AC 2-tier coaches and one first class AC coach. Talking about this train, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had said that this train will give passengers a comfortable and fast travel experience. After launching, this train will be very useful for those who want to travel from Delhi to Howrah or Howrah to Delhi in less time.

According to the information uploaded by the government on PIB, the first 16-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train has successfully completed the rigorous testing of Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) for a distance of five hundred and forty kilometers in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad section on January 15, 2025.

Integral Coach Factory, Chennai completed the manufacturing of India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train set on December 17 last year. Within a fortnight, the train was brought to Kota division and short trial runs of 30-40 km were successfully completed. During this time, the train performed well even at a speed of 180 kmph.

After successful testing of the prototype, nine more Vande Bharat sleeper train sets are scheduled to be produced between April and December 2025. These trains will set new standards in terms of efficiency and convenience for long-distance travellers.

Indian Railways gave a big order

To make this sleeper train available for the first time, Indian Railways has placed a large order of propulsion electrics for 50 rakes of 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper Train sets on 17 December 2024. The order has been placed with two major Indian manufacturers, which are likely to be ready in a time frame of 2 years.

Like other mail or express trains of the country, Vande Bharat Sleeper train is also divided into three categories – AC First Class, AC Second Tier and AC Third Tier. 1,128 passengers can travel in this train at a time. Apart from this, keeping safety in mind, modern technology like crash buffer, deformation tube and fire barrier wall has been used in it.

Soon Vande Bharat train with 24 coaches

Looking ahead, the Railway Ministry further said that full-scale production of the 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper train will begin in 2026-27, further strengthening India’s self-reliance in railway technology.

Many high-tech features have been added to this train for the convenience of passengers. From automatic gates to comfortable cushioned berths, this train will set a new benchmark for comfortable travel. Apart from this, every passenger will get free WiFi facility onboard, so that they can enjoy the Internet during the journey.

The minister said that the longest distance Vande Bharat train is running between Delhi and Varanasi, covering a distance of 771 km.

The New Delhi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Sleeper train will cover the distance of more than 800 km in less than 13 hours. Currently, there is no direct train service available between these two places. With the launch of Vande Bharat Sleeper train, Kashmir Valley will get direct rail connectivity from New Delhi for the first time.
