Today, a Vande Bharat Sleeper Train factory has been started in Uttarpara, Kolkata.

Where is the factory located

The new factory of Vande Bharat Sleeper Train has been built in Uttarpara, Kolkata. It has been built jointly by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). They have built a special production line for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains there. TRSL Vice Chairman and Managing Director Umesh Chaudhary and BHEL Director Bani Verma inaugurated this production line. TRSL has got a contract from Indian Railways to make 80 Vande Bharat Sleeper Train sets. This contract has been signed under an agreement between TRSL and BHEL.

When will the first train be made?

Work has now started at the Uttarpara unit. It is expected that the first train will be ready by next year. This factory has the features of Industry 4.0 and also has robot-operated production lines. This is the only place in the country where both stainless steel and aluminium coaches can be made under one roof. Industry 4.0 means that modern technology and automation are being used in the factory.

Designed in India itself

The sleeper version of Vande Bharat will be India’s first long distance, semi high-speed train. It has been completely designed in India. It will provide comfort to the passengers and will also have modern features for safety. The coaches of the train have been built in a modern way. It has smart systems and it runs on less power. This train will give a new experience of traveling between cities in India.

Currently being made in the same factory

At present, only BEML is manufacturing Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. BEML is a public sector undertaking of the Ministry of Defence. It has already been manufacturing coaches for the railways. It has manufactured the prototype set of Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. It was trialled by running it around Kota in Rajasthan . There are plans to run this train set on the New Delhi to Howrah route.

Speaking at the inauguration of the production line, Umesh Chaudhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Titagarh Rail Systems said, “This is a proud moment for the Titagarh Rail Systems-BHEL team. Indian Railways is going to launch Vande Bharat Sleeper train between Delhi and Howrah. It will be the third premium service on this route after Rajdhani Express and Duronto Express. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave a glimpse of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train made with Integral Coach Factory technology in September 2024.

This Vande Bharat train running between Delhi and Howrah will stop at Kanpur Central, Prayagraj Junction, DD Upadhyay Junction, Gaya Junction, Dhanbad Junction and Asansol Junction. The fare of AC 3-tier of this train is expected to be around Rs 3000, AC 2-tier Rs 4000 and First Class AC fare is Rs 5100. This train will leave from New Delhi at 5 pm and reach Howrah at 8 am. On the return journey, it will leave from Howrah at 5 pm and reach Delhi at 8 am the next day.

The train will have 16 coaches, including 11 AC Tier-3

This train has been built by BEML using Integral Coach Factory technology. According to the information, this train will have 16 coaches. These will include 11 AC 3-tier coaches, 4 AC 2-tier coaches and one first class AC coach. Talking about this train, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had said that this train will give passengers a comfortable and fast travel experience. After launching, this train will be very useful for those who want to travel from Delhi to Howrah or Howrah to Delhi in less time.

The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train set with 16 coaches is now awaiting approval from Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) to be filled. Successful trial up to a distance of 540 km

The board said in its statement, ‘RDSO will issue the final certificate after analyzing the test before the operation of India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train. The Railway Safety Commissioner will evaluate the train at its maximum speed.’ According to the board, the dream of a world-class high-speed sleeper train has now become a reality, as the first 16-coach Vande Bharat sleeper train set successfully trialed a distance of 540 km in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad section. Chennai-based ICF completed the manufacture of India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train set on 17 December 2024.

According to the Railway Board, the train was brought to Kota Division within a fortnight and was successfully trialled for short distances of 30 to 40 km for three consecutive days in the first week of last month. During this, the train provided a comfortable travel experience at a high speed of 180 kmph. The board said that long distance trials have also been successful. This is an important step for the Indian Railways, which is moving towards the introduction of high-speed trains in the country.

On Thursday, the train achieved a speed of 180 km/h during a 30 km long run between Kota and Laban in Bundi district of Rajasthan. On the first day of January 1, 2025, during a 40 km long trial run between Rohal Khurd and Kota, the Vande Bharat sleeper train touched a speed of 180 km/h. On the same day, speeds of 170 km/h and 160 km/h were achieved on the Kota-Nagda and Rohal Khurd-Chowmahala sections. Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology Shri  Ashwini  Vaishnaw,  in a statement is laid on the table of the House of Rajya Sabha, said that  presently,  Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains planned for long and medium distance journey are equipped with modern features and passenger amenities. Some of the distinguished features and amenities of these trains are as under:

1. Fitted with KAVACH.
2. EN-45545 HL3 fire safety standards compliant train.
3. Crashworthy and Jerk-Free Semi permanent couplers and Anti Climbers.
4. Crashworthy Design of Carbody complying with EN standards.
5. Regenerative braking system for energy efficiency.
6. Higher Average speed with quick deceleration and acceleration.
7. Emergency talk-back unit for communication between Passenger and Train Manager/Loco Pilot in case of emergency.
8. Accommodation and accessible toilets for Passengers with Restricted Mobility (PRM) in the driving coaches on each end.
9. Centrally controlled Automatic Plug Doors and Fully Sealed wider gangways.
10. Ergonomically designed ladder for ease of climbing on to upper berths.
11. Centralized Coach Monitoring System for better condition monitoring of passenger amenities such as Air conditioning, Saloon Lighting etc.
12. CCTV surveillance cameras in all coaches.

Talking about medium distance Vande Bharat train services, the Union Minister said that as on 02^nd December, 2024, 136 Vande Bharat train services with Chair Car Coaches are running across the Indian Railways network. Of these, 16 Vande Bharat Express services are catering to the needs of stations located in the States of Tamil Nadu. The longest distance Vande Bharat train services are running between Delhi and Banaras, covering a distance of 771 km. He further added that introduction of new train services, including Vande Bharat services and its variants, is an ongoing process on Indian Railways subject to traffic justification, operational feasibility, resource availability, etc.

After BEML, the national transporter is working to start manufacturing 1920 coaches for Vande Bharat sleeper trains at its Latur-based Rail Coach Factory.

According to ETNow, the national transporter has awarded the contract to manufacture the new edition of the Vande Bharat Express train to three companies – BEML, Kinet Railway Solution (a joint venture between Russian rolling stock major TMH and Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd), and a consortium of Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd and Bharat Heavy Engineering Ltd (BHEL). Of these, Kinet Railway Solution will produce coaches for Indian Railways’ Vande Bharat sleeper trains under a contract worth US$6.5 billion.

The first Vande Bharat sleeper train will run on this route

According to the news, the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train will run on the New Delhi to Srinagar route. The commercial operation of this train will start in January 2025. This semi-high-speed train will run on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link, which will provide passengers a better travel experience with modern facilities. The Vande Bharat Sleeper train will cover the distance of more than 800 km between New Delhi and Srinagar in less than 13 hours. That means its speed will be much higher than Rajdhani.

The speed will be 180 km

Subba Rao said that the cost of making one train is Rs 120 crore. The train will be tested for two months at a speed of 90 km per hour to 180 km per hour. Its security features will also be checked. An emergency brake system has been installed in it. Its control has been kept in a very scientific way. All these things will be tested. We are going to complete the testing work by November 15. This testing will be done in Lucknow RDSO and Western Railway. We hope that by January 15, its public use will be approved.

What new facilities have been added?

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will have many new facilities. Such as sensor activated interconnecting doors have been installed. Touch-free bio-vacuum toilets and talk-back units have been installed. First class coupes will have stairs and flight-style attendant buttons for easy access to the upper berths. Anti-collision system ‘Kavach’ and anti-climbing technology have also been installed to protect the train from accidents. It does not allow the coaches to climb over each other in case of an accident. This reduces the risk significantly.

Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and ICF are working on its finishing. After this, 9 more Vande Bharat sleeper trains will be made. ICF plans to make 50 additional Vande Bharat sleeper trains in the next 24 months. Subba Rao also said that ICF is developing a new train for parcel delivery, which will be ready by April. The first hydrogen-powered coach will also be developed in four months. In the next 12 to 18 months, we will bring 21 new chair car Vande Bharat trains with 20 coaches.
