Unified Pension Scheme: The Finance Ministry has now extended the last date for choosing between Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and National Pension System (NPS) to 30 September 2025. Earlier this deadline was fixed as 30 June 2025. This decision has been taken after the stakeholders demanded to extend the deadline.
The press release issued by the government said, “In view of the requests received from stakeholders, the last date for opting for UPS option has been extended by three months to September 30, 2025. This deadline will apply to current employees, pre-retired employees and duly married wives of deceased retired personnel.”
Who got the benefit?
This decision will give central government employees an additional three months to decide whether to choose UPS or remain in NPS. This will enable them to choose their pension option wisely.
UPS is an optional pension scheme, effective from 1 April 2025, and guarantees fixed pension payouts and a lump sum on retirement. Recently, gratuity benefits have also been extended to employees opting for UPS, which were earlier available only to OPS beneficiaries.
Who is eligible for UPS?
Central government employees who are in service as on April 1, 2025 or have retired as on March 31, 2025 are eligible to switch from NPS to UPS. Provided they have completed at least 10 years of service and have retired under Fundamental Rules 56(j), when this retirement is not considered a penalty under CCS (CCA) Rules.
Further, duly married spouses of eligible deceased retired employees of UPS are also eligible for this option.
