The Income Tax Department is upgrading the 10-digit PAN. This happened. And then the Cabinet approved it. The goal? To make the PAN the primary, universal identifier for individuals and every business out there.

The thing is, your existing PAN card is still valid. You don’t have to rush out and get a new one immediately. But upgrading has major benefits.

The Big Upgrades (Why You Should Care)

  • QR Code on All Cards: Every card is getting an improved QR code. This enables instant, digital verification. It cuts down on fraud, which is the whole point. Someone can scan it and instantly pull up your data.

  • Universal Business ID: For businesses, this is the kicker. The government wants PAN to replace other identification numbers (like TAN) to become a common business identifier. It simplifies everything. Less paperwork, less running around.

  • Fully Online Process: The entire application and management process is now 100% online and paperless. They are aiming for a single, unified digital platform for all PAN/TAN services.

  • Data Accuracy: PAN 2.0 will serve as a central, accurate data repository. It aims to eliminate duplication and ensure data consistency across all government systems.

Your Urgent Action: How to Get the New QR Card

If you want the enhanced card with the QR code (and you should, for security and ease), you can request a reprint.

  • The Cost: It costs a fee of ₹50 for delivery within India.

  • Where to Go: You need to check your current PAN card to see which agency issued it: Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL. The process is slightly different but similar.

  • The Process (Using NSDL as Example):

    1. Go to the respective Reprint webpage.

    2. Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number, and Date of Birth.

    3. Generate an OTP via email or mobile.

    4. Validate the OTP.

    5. Pay the ₹50 fee.

    6. Save the acknowledgement receipt.

The e-PAN is usually available for download within 24 hours, and the physical card is delivered to your registered address in about 15–20 days. It’s a small investment for a big security upgrade. This move is expected to streamline everything and massively reduce fraud.
