Rupees 500 Note : The government has made it clear that the 500 rupee notes are neither being discontinued nor will they stop being available from ATMs . Recently, social media and some media reports claimed that by the end of 2025, 500 rupee notes will not be available from ATMs .

But the Finance Ministry put an end to all these rumors by answering in Parliament. The ministry said that the Reserve Bank of India’s ( RBI) aim is only to increase the number of small notes i.e. 100 rupees and 200 rupees. So that, common people do not face any kind of problem.

What is the new instruction?

RBI has issued a circular on 28th April 2025, directing all the banks and white label ATM operators to

By 30 September 2025 – 75% of the ATMs in the country should dispense at least one cassette of Rs 100 or Rs 200 notes.

By 31 March 2026 – 90% of ATMs should have this facility. This means that the number of small notes in ATMs will increase, but 500 rupee notes will also continue to be available simultaneously.

Why is this change necessary?

Small notes are very important for daily shopping, taxi fare, vegetables and fruits and other small expenses. At present, many times when a 500 rupee note comes out from the ATM , the shopkeeper or the customer faces the problem of change. RBI wants that people should get small notes directly from the ATM , so that this problem is reduced.

What questions and answers took place in the Parliament?

In Rajya Sabha, MPs Yerram Venkat Subba Reddy and Milind Deora had asked whether the government is going to ban 500 rupee notes or is there a plan to stop their dispensation from ATMs . In response to this, the Finance Ministry clearly said that there is no proposal to stop the supply of 500 rupee notes. Along with 500 rupees, 100 and 200 rupee notes will also continue to be available in ATMs .
