Aadhaar Card Update: New Aadhaar card rules come into effect; UIDAI expands list of documents, changes enrolment and update rules

Aadhaar Card Update 2026: Aadhaar card is one of the most essential documents today. It’s required for every small and large task. To simplify and streamline the Aadhaar card process across the country, the UIDAI has implemented new regulations. Under the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) First Amendment Regulations, 2026, more documents will be valid for Aadhaar creation and updates. Additionally, rules have been simplified for children, transgender individuals, foreign nationals, OCI cardholders, and those in special care. New Documents Valid for Aadhaar

UIDAI has expanded the list of documents accepted for Aadhaar enrollment. All of these documents will be valid for Aadhaar card enrollment.

e-Ration Card
Pension Payment Order
Marriage Certificate
Divorce Decree
CGHS/ECHS/ESIC Card
Electricity, Water, and Gas Bills
Educational Certificates and Marksheets
Bank Statement and Passbook
Insurance Policy
Registered Rent Agreement
MNREGA Job Card
Prison Identity Card
Shelter Home Certificate
UIDAI Standard Certificate issued by the authorities

UIDAI has clarified that any document will be accepted only if it is valid and not expired, belongs to the person applying, the information can be verified with the relevant department, and the issuing authority has not declared it invalid.

New Aadhaar Update Rules

More documents will now be accepted for updating name, address, date of birth, and relationship information in Aadhaar. These include marriage certificates, divorce certificates, bank documents, insurance documents, educational records, and gazette notifications related to name changes.

New Rules for Children’s Aadhaar Cards

UIDAI has mandated Head of Family-based enrollment for children under 5 years of age. The birth certificate will be the primary document, and providing documents from the parent or guardian will be mandatory. HoF-based enrollment is also preferred for children between 5 and 18 years of age. However, document-based enrollment is also available if needed.

New Rules for Foreign Nationals and OCI Cardholders

UIDAI has now also established the validity period for Aadhaar. This period is as follows.

OCI cardholders – 10 years
LTV holders – up to the duration of the visa
Nepal/Bhutan citizens – 10 years
Other foreign nationals – up to the duration of the visa or FRRO permit

Identity cards and certificates issued under the Transgender Persons Act, 2019, will now be valid for Aadhaar updates. These documents can be used to update name, gender, date of birth, address, and relationship information. UIDAI has also recognized guardianship documents issued under the National Trust Act, Guardians and Wards Act, and Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act. This will benefit orphaned children, persons with disabilities, and those living under legal guardianship.
