What is the rule of leave for central employees?
The provision of leaves for central employees has been made under the Central Civil Services Leave Rules, 1972. Under this rule, different types of leaves are given to the employees, which meet their various needs. Recently, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh told in the Rajya Sabha that now employees can use their 30 days of earned leave for the care of elderly parents or for any personal reason. This will help the employees to fulfill their responsibilities towards the family.
Central employees get these main holidays
1. Earned Leave:
Central Government employees get 30 days of earned leave every year. They can take this leave for any reason of their choice. Such as taking care of family, serving elderly parents, travelling or other personal work. This is also known as annual leave.
2. Half-Pay Leave:
In this, the employee gets half salary. Half-pay leave can be taken for up to 20 days annually. It is mainly given for medical treatment or serious reasons.
3. Casual Leave:
Every year 8 days of casual leave is given. This leave is for sudden requirements or emergency situations. Prior permission from the office is required for this.
4. Restricted Holidays:
Employees can take 2 days of restricted leave on festivals or religious occasions as per their choice. This gives employees a chance to participate in their cultural and religious celebrations.
5. Weekly Off:
Employees get weekly off, which is usually Sunday but it may vary as per office rules.
Special holidays that employees are entitled to
Central employees not only get normal leaves, but also additional leaves under certain special circumstances. These special leaves are provided as per the need of the employee, the major ones being:
- Medical Leave: Given for illness or treatment.
- Maternity Leave: Female employees get leave before and after the birth of a child.
- Paternity Leave: Leave given to male employees on becoming fathers.
- Child Care Leave: Leave granted for the care of a child.
- Study Leave: Given to employees for higher education or training.
New facility of 30 days additional leave
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh recently told the Rajya Sabha that now employees can use their earned leave for up to 30 days for the care of elderly parents or for personal reasons. This change has been made keeping in mind the family responsibilities of the employees. This will make it possible to take better care of the elderly and the employees will also feel better mentally.
How many holidays do you get in total?

- Half Pay Leave: 20 days
- Casual Leave: 8 days
- Restricted Holiday: 2 days
- Weekly holidays: Approximately 52 days in 52 weeks (usually Sundays)
- Special holidays: As per different situation
