Why Is the Pay Rising?
The government calculates your raise using the All India Consumer Price Index (AICPI-IW). First, the Ministry of Labour tracks the cost of living for industrial workers. Next, they use a specific formula to adjust your salary twice a year. Specifically, the index stayed at 148.2 in December 2025. Therefore, the math confirms a 5% jump for the January to June 2026 period.
-
The Old Rate: 58% (Last updated in July 2025).
-
The New Rate: 63% (Effective from January 1, 2026).
-
The Payout: You will likely see the extra cash in your April 2026 salary.
The Bonus Hike in Transport Allowance
The good news does not stop at your basic DA. Notably, your transport allowance (TA) also increases by the same percentage. Specifically, if you live in a big city and draw a base TA of ₹1,800, your travel money will spike. Moreover, the new calculation adds ₹1,134 to that base. Consequently, your total transport allowance will reach ₹2,934 every month.

What About the DA Merger?
Many employee unions are currently demanding a “DA Merger.” Specifically, they want the government to merge the 63% allowance with the basic pay. However, the Finance Ministry recently clarified its stance in the Lok Sabha. Specifically, they stated that no such plan is under consideration right now. Instead, the government will wait for the 8th Pay Commission to make its final report.
The Timing of Your Arrears
The hike is backdated to January 1st. Consequently, you are owed extra money for January, February, and March. Notably, the government usually clears these files by late March. Therefore, your April paycheck will include a large lump sum of backdated “arrears.” In conclusion, this 63% milestone is a major win for government workers battling inflation in 2026…![]()
