If you do banking through your smartphone or mobile phone or make transactions through UPI, then you need to read this news carefully. From April 1, those mobile numbers which are not in use will be removed from the bank account or UPI apps.

To explain in simple language, if you had linked a number to your bank account or UPI app like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm and did not recharge that number. If the number is not working, then that number will be removed from your bank account. According to media reports, National Payments Corporation of India i.e. NPCI has asked banks and apps to remove such numbers by March 31. If this is the case with you too, then you need to follow the steps given below.

    Why was this decision taken

According to reports, linking old and useless mobile numbers which are not in use to any bank account can lead to technical problems. If that mobile number is issued in someone else’s name, there is also a fear of fraud. The government wants to keep people safe by avoiding such situations.

    Mobile number serves as identification

In case of UPI payment, the mobile number acts as the identification and ensures that the other person is getting the correct payment or not. If the mobile number is not in use and someone else has issued it, then it can cause technical problems. The chances of payment failure increase. That is why orders have been given to delete such numbers.

What should the affected people do?

People whose mobile number is linked to their bank account and they have not been able to recharge it for a long time, should confirm with their mobile operator like Jio, Airtel or Voda-Idea whether the number is active on your number or not. If the number is active in your name, then get it recharged immediately. If the number has been deactivated, then get it activated.

    Which mobile numbers get deactivated

According to the report, if a mobile number is not recharged for 90 days, it can be deactivated. However, the user is given a grace period of 15 days and in that period he can get his number activated again. If the number is not activated, then that SIM becomes inactive and it can be allotted to someone else.

What has NPCI said to banks and UPI apps?

NPCI has asked banks and UPI apps to update the list of deleted mobile numbers every week. This will ensure that useless numbers will be removed from the system after April 1. If you are also among those people whose mobile number has not been recharged for many months and it is registered with banking and UPI payments, then get your number activated immediately. By doing this you will be able to avoid any dilemma.
