Under the auto upgradation rule of Indian Railways, if you have booked your ticket in Sleeper class and it is in RAC and after chart preparation, seats are left vacant in Third AC, then your class will be upgraded.
You will be able to travel in third AC on a sleeper class ticket. The special thing is that you will not have to pay any kind of charge for this. On the other hand, if your RAC ticket is in third AC and after the chart is prepared, seats in second AC remain vacant, then you will get a confirmed seat in second AC.
Similarly, you can travel in First AC on a Second AC ticket. Indian Railways has made this special rule keeping in mind the convenience of passengers.
