Non-vegetarian food options will soon be included on the menu of the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, running between Howrah and Kamakhya. An Eastern Railway official announced this on Tuesday. Many passengers had expressed objections to the current vegetarian-only menu on this six-day-a-week train. An Eastern Railway official said, “Non-vegetarian food options are likely to be available on the Vande Bharat Sleeper train menu within a week.” It should be noted that this train, which runs between Howrah and Kamakhya, carries a majority of passengers from West Bengal and Assam, where non-vegetarian food is highly preferred in these two states.

PM Modi flagged off the train on January 17

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the train on January 17, after which it began regular commercial services from Guwahati’s Kamakhya station on January 22 and from Howrah the following day. The Railways also assured that the food served on the Vande Bharat Sleeper train will be rich in local flavors, with Assamese cuisine on the train departing from Kamakhya and local West Bengal cuisine on the train departing from Howrah. Non-vegetarian dishes, including fish and meat, play a prominent role in the local cuisines of both West Bengal and Assam. Other premium railway trains, such as the Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, and Vande Bharat trains, already offer non-vegetarian food options to passengers.

The BJP leader spoke with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav.

Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar has said that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has assured him that non-vegetarian food options will be available on the Vande Bharat Sleeper train. Majumdar said on Monday that Vaishnav told him that the train’s menu is currently vegetarian, but non-vegetarian food will be included soon. He said, “People in West Bengal and Assam are mostly non-vegetarian, so such dishes will be served on the Vande Bharat Sleeper train.”
