On January 7, 2026, OpenAI officially expanded into the healthcare sector with the launch of ChatGPT Health. This dedicated new feature allows users in the US to upload and sync their medical records and wellness data for personalized AI analysis.

While OpenAI frames the tool as a “personal assistant” for deciphering complex health data, privacy advocates have raised urgent warnings about the handling of sensitive patient information outside of traditional clinical protections.

1. Key Features of ChatGPT Health

The service creates a specialized environment within the ChatGPT interface (available on Web and iOS) specifically for health-related queries.

  • Data Integration: Users can securely link patient portals (via a partnership with b.well), Apple Health, and apps like MyFitnessPal, Peloton, and Weight Watchers.

  • Medical Record Review: The AI can analyze lab results, visit summaries, and insurance documents to explain medical jargon or summarize care instructions.

  • Decoupled Memory: Health conversations are stored in a separate sidebar tab with its own “memory,” preventing medical context from leaking into general chats.

  • Clinical Guardrails: OpenAI collaborated with over 260 physicians and used its HealthBench (released May 2025) to ensure responses meet clinical safety standards.

2. Privacy & Security Architecture

OpenAI has implemented “layered protections” to address the high sensitivity of medical data:

Feature Protection Level
Model Training Opt-out by Default: Conversations are not used to train OpenAI’s foundational models.
Encryption Purpose-built isolation and encryption specifically for the Health silo.
Authentication Support for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is encouraged for all Health users.
Siloed Environment General ChatGPT cannot access files or memories created within the Health tab.

3. The Privacy Debate: “The HIPAA Gap”

The launch has sparked significant concern from organizations like the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT).

  • HIPAA Concerns: Advocates warn that once a patient voluntarily shares their records with an AI firm, those records may lose HIPAA protections, which typically only apply to “covered entities” like doctors and hospitals.

  • Advertising Risk: Critics point out that as OpenAI explores advertising models, the “airtight” separation between health data and user profiles is vital but unproven.

  • Legal Transparency: CEO Sam Altman has previously noted that ChatGPT does not offer doctor-patient privilege, meaning records could potentially be subpoenaed in legal proceedings.

4. Availability & Eligibility

  • Current Status: Rolling out to a limited group of early users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.

  • Supported Regions: Primarily the United States.

  • Excluded Regions: Currently unavailable in the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area (EEA) due to strict data processing regulations.

Disclaimer: OpenAI explicitly states that ChatGPT Health is not intended for “diagnosis or treatment” and should only be used to support, not replace, professional medical care.
