Attari Border Closed: After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India has taken a tough step against Pakistan. The Government of India has decided to immediately close the check post (ICP) built in Attari.

This decision has been taken by the cabinet committee related to the security of the country. 26 people lost their lives in this terrorist attack. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri gave this information on Wednesday. He said that those who crossed the border with valid documents can return through the same route before May 1, 2025, but this route will remain open only for a fixed time.

Now the question is what effect will this decision have on the trade between India and Pakistan? According to the Times of India report, Attari border is the only land route through which trade takes place between the two countries. India sends things like soybean, chicken feed, vegetables, plastic granules, plastic thread and red chillies to Pakistan through this route.

Trade worth Rs 3,886.53 crore was done through Attari-Wagah border

Attari, which is just 28 km from Amritsar, is India’s first land port and the only land route for trade with Pakistan. The port is spread over 120 acres and is directly connected to National Highway-1. The Attari check post plays an important role not only in India-Pakistan trade but also in the import of goods from Afghanistan. The Attari-Wagah corridor has seen fluctuations in trade and passenger movement every year. In the year 2023-24, 6,871 cargo vehicles passed through this port and 71,563 people traveled through this route. During this period, a total trade of Rs 3,886.53 crore was done.

This port has been an important trade route between India and Pakistan for a long time. India sends goods like soybean, chicken feed, vegetables, red chillies, plastic granules and plastic thread from here. On the other hand, dry fruits, dry dates, gypsum, cement, glass, rock salt and various kinds of herbs come to India from Pakistan and other countries. Now the closure of this port will affect the trade of these things, especially those small traders and companies who depend on this cross-border trade.

Know what will be its effect?

The already weakened trade relations between India and Pakistan are going to suffer another major setback due to the increasing tension. The decision to close the Attari check post will especially affect small traders and industries that depend on the trade of everyday essential items.

Apart from this, the import-export between India and Afghanistan can also be affected because many of these goods come and go through this route via Pakistan. Now due to the closure of this route, there can be a lot of problems in delivering the goods, due to which problems related to logistics i.e. freight transportation can increase.
