Pakistan’s state-owned oil company, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), has announced the discovery of new oil and gas reserves in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The discovery was made at an exploratory well named Baragzai X-01 (Slant). This is the third discovery within a month and is expected to significantly increase Pakistan’s domestic oil production.

Thousands of barrels of crude oil produced daily

The well was drilled on December 30, 2024, and then tested using a cased-hole drill system from the Samana Suk and Shinawari formations. Test results indicated a daily production of 3,100 barrels of crude oil and 8.15 million standard cubic feet of natural gas, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 3,010 pounds per square inch at a 32/64-inch choke size.

Pakistan leads in oil and gas production

This is the third discovery within a month, and together, these three discoveries have increased Pakistan’s domestic oil production by 9,480 barrels per day. This represents approximately 14.5 percent of the country’s current production (approximately 66,000 barrels per day). Gas production has also increased significantly. OGDCL has provided this information through a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange. OGDCL holds a 65 percent stake in the project, while Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) holds a 30 percent carried interest, and Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL) holds a 5 percent carried interest.

Why is this discovery important for Pakistan?

Pakistan is grappling with an energy crisis and economic difficulties. To reduce dependence on expensive imports, the government is emphasizing increasing domestic oil and gas production. OGDCL says this discovery will narrow the gap between energy supply and demand from domestic resources and increase the country’s hydrocarbon reserves. Last year, the government signed five new exploration deals. In November 2025, 40 offshore blocks were auctioned, receiving 23 bids from four consortia. The initial investment was $80 million, which could reach $1 billion in the future.
