Railway Luggage Limit 2025: Indian Railways has fixed a luggage limit for its passengers. The Railways has said that the luggage limit will be different for each class of passengers. Those traveling after April 1 should know this. Indian Railways transports about 3 crore passengers every day. All these passengers are allowed to travel with their own luggage.
For millions of people travelling on India’s vast railway network, knowing this is as important as booking a ticket. As per the official rules of Indian Railways, the free baggage allowance is determined by the class of travel. For example, if you are travelling in first class, you can carry the maximum baggage allowance, while for passengers in second class or general class, the baggage limit is the lowest.
What is the limit in AC first class?
Railways has allowed AC First Class passengers to carry up to 70 kg of luggage without any additional charges. Similarly, AC Two-Tier passengers are allowed to carry up to 50 kg of luggage, while AC Three-Tier and Sleeper Class passengers are allowed to carry up to 40 kg of luggage. Of course, the Railways does not charge any additional fare or money from those travelling with this much luggage.
What is the limit for general classes?
If you are travelling in a general coach or second sitting class of a train, then the railways has given a minimum allowance for carrying luggage in it. For a general coach, this luggage limit is only 35 kg. This means that if you are travelling in a general coach or on a general ticket, you can carry only 35 kg of luggage with you.
If you want to gain more weight
As per the Railway rules, if a passenger has to carry luggage exceeding the prescribed limit, he has to book a baggage van in advance. You can carry any weight of luggage in the baggage van. Also, if you carry luggage exceeding the prescribed limit, the Railways can charge you a penalty. This amount can be one and a half times the normal rate charged by the Railways on the goods. For example, if the Railways rate is Rs 10 per kg, it can charge you a penalty of Rs 15 per kg.
Size is important along with weight.
Railways not only charges based on the weight of the luggage but also on its size. Railways has also fixed the size of the luggage. Railways allows only trunks, suitcases and boxes up to 100 cm X 60 cm X 25 cm (length X width X height) to be carried as luggage in passenger coaches. If the luggage is larger than this, it will be included in the category of heavy luggage.
Traffic rules changed, one small mistake and you will have to pay a fine of Rs 25,000
